dy on a skill which can only come
from a close study of details, which
can only be acquired by the application of hard common sense, accompanied by immense powers of eudurance. Many men haye been atiracted to Montana, Idaho and the North
Western States by the new mineral
discoveries which have been developed recently, and this in agreat measure-accounts forthe complaints which
are heard from here on-ull sides. It
-{is not so-long ago. that one of the

Mining “Accidente:
Says the Auburn Argus of Monday:
Charles Carter,-a-native of Cornwall,
working at the Mini Rica mine near
Ophir, Placer county, was killed by
talling from the tub, while~ being
hoisted from the mine Saturday evening. Hehad given t ignal to be
‘hoisted out of the mine, and while
the men were pulling him up -he
seemed to have been tuken with a
fit-and must have fallen probably 70
feet.. He died about an hour after
the occurrence. An inquest held yesterday by Coroner Rooney found a
verdict in accordance with the above
circumetances,
_Eleven or twelve men were. almost
inatantly killed in the Utica mine,
Angels Camp, Oalaveras county, about
noon of Monday. A. load of men were
being lowered on the skip, and when
about one hundred and fifty fevt from
the surface, the rope broke, precipitating all a distance of 450 feet to the
bottom of the shaft.

BAD MANAGEMENT.
A Well: Kmown Mine That Hae
Suffered Frem ft.
Says the San Francisco News Letter of Saturday: ©
“The New Pittsburg Gold Mine,
Limited, situated near Nevada City,
has been incorporated in Lendon to
take over the property of that name,
which was floated some months ago
for a large sum ef money. Noresults
have, as yet, been attained in the way
of bullion, and it seems absutd to go
g0 on spending money in such an aprparently reckless manner, It may}
be, however, phat the management at
the mine may have something to de
with the misfortunes which have followed the old company. The Direc
ory in this city is composed of firat
class men, who rank high in the com
munity for strict integrity in business
matters, but it does not follow that
they are fully posted on practical mining. The district is one of the best in
California, and it seems strange that
any property with pretensions asa
‘mine should be running bentne all the
tine.
The Pittsburg shen large
quantities of bullion many years ago,
and is no deubt.a _firstclass._property.
But-for some-time until quits-recently
it bas not had afair show. The"money spent has beer mainly applied on
the ‘surface where there is one of the] —
best plants in the county. A promising ore body has been feund in the
deeper workings, and a few thousand
dollars judiciously spent would doubtless give gratifying returns.
