WHAT A CORRESPONDENT
“Has to Say: About Hugh Morrison's Long
Winded Tirade,
Eptror Transorirr : In your yesterday's paper ‘considerable space was given
to Hugh Morrison, as he showed up the
work of the hydraulickers, He makes
the mistake of many of the valley pee ple
to mine,’ _All men who own gravel min-s
believe they have just the same right to
work their mine by hydraulic ‘preces
that the farmer has to work his land as
he wishes ; but the miner obeys even an
—-unjust—law,-and-is-cbliged—to—ask—not
enly the repeal of such ‘laws, but the aid
of the .Gevernment, that impounding
dams may be coustructed, that the farmers may never suffer. If those who
watch the color in the rivers after “a
rain at once. concludethat— hydraulic
mining is going on, they had best come
to the foothills during a rain storm and
see the natural. wash that rushes into
every raviue. The help of the Govern
ment is also asked to dredge the rivers,
-te free their beds, not from mining slickens, but from the naturaland inevitable
wash of the hills and -monntains:—-If--the
miners would talk and write as persistently as do the farmers, their ‘side of the
question would be better understood, .
aud those who are inclined to: do justice
by the hydraulic miners would have a
clearer ‘knowledge of the facts. There
_ that the main point is to gain the right
filled up in Placer. and Nevada counties,
but there are thousands of acres in the
proved by ten or twenty feet of slickens.
There the watery waste, that Mr. Morrison strangely attributes to hydraulic
mining, would. become ready for the
plow. OonveRrteD VALLEYITE.
