the Debris Question:
Senator F.‘R, Dray of Sacramento,
who will. attend the coming, Miners’
State Convention as a dalegess, frony his
county, says in last evening’s News :
“T will be gl represent this
county in that conve' n, and I shall go
there as a friend of the miners, not as
their enemy. ~ I shall go with the intention of helping all the people—those
of the mountain as well as. those of the
valley.
‘There is one thing ‘that ought to fe!
understood at the outset, and that: is
that the plan for putting in restraining
‘dams will never do, for such dams will]
never be effective. They cannot be
made to work satisfactorily. here is
pno-such thing as controlling a moun!ain
torrent. ‘The debris would be only
partly impounded. Enough would be
carried over the dais to fill the valleys
and ruin the river channels, ee
**One plan is open to the miners, and
in that they would have the support of
everybody. Let them build steel Vflumes from the scene of operations and
carry the debris clear of ‘the water
courses until _it_reaehes points where it
can be utilized. There is the American

The Marysville Appeal of yesterday:
says: ‘‘George H. Sternes-was married

was not long ago mixed up in the scanLawrence divorce suit that
Sierra
county, Lawrence tried to prove that
there had been an improper intimacy between his wife and the spy, but failed to
se convince the court. Sternes was.

Taken for a Crank,
A semi-fiendish delight often seems to
possess people of strong nerves in snee?ing at those with weak ones. The irritability of the nervous hypochondriac is
ridicuted as naturalill temper. The very
genuine and-distressing symptoms from
which he suffers are made light of.. ‘‘He”’
or ‘she is a crank!” is the cheerful sort
of sympathy with which the nervous invalid meets from the unfeeling and the
thoughtless, At the same time no complaint is more defined and real, none has
a more easily explainable origin when it
is chronic. Imperfect digestion and asnervous debility and anxiety. Build up
the powders of assimilation and digestion

thus prodyced would be valuable. The
Yolo basin could be improved in the
same way.
“Tt seems to me that this plan ig
practicable. “The cost would be great,
of course, but. if the mountains contain
all those :illions of gold nobody could
object on that account. The increased
value of the filled-in basins would alone
more than counterbalayce the outlay.
The minors should pay their share.”
“This is a legitimate matter for Congress to take hold of. Our State Legisiature; too, would be -warranted—inmaking an appropriation ‘in aid of any
feasible plan having this beneficent object in view. As a taxpayer of Sacramento county, I would favor the levying
of a special tax upon ourselves to help
arry out this work. It would pay this
community well.to stand its share of the
cost of such an undertaking, for it would
offer a complete solution of the slickens
problem, and would be a benefit to all.”
The News, in commenting upon the
Senator’s remarks, says: These are the
views of-a-man who haa given much
study to the subject of hydraulic mining.
They appear tu be well founded, ~ One
thing is made manifest, and that is, that
no dependence can be put in so-called restraining dams. ‘They are not. effective
when new, and ever after would be a
menaceto the people velow. After the
miners +got through with them there
would be nobody to keep them up.
Sooner or later they would succumb to
the rushing waters that would carry destruction to eve ything below. The
scheme to build steel flumes would he a”
gigantic undertaking, but the good to be
derived would more than womponiate for
the outlay.

It is doubtful whether any” similar institution on the coast. enjoys—a_ superior

sightly summits of Fruitvale, a suburb-of
Oakland, and in respect to climate, scenery, beauty of grounds, variety and
abundance of fruits and flowers, supply

for children. School and church are near
and inmates of the institution will enjoy
Lin rare..combination—tha advantages_of‘both country at and city life. .

Very truly yours,

The misrepresentation which called forth -the resolution of
the State Board of Health of New York, printed above, is in keep.
ing with the old tactics of the Royal Baking Powder Company.
First it manufactured a Government Chemist out of whole
cloth, and the garment was cut and made to fit Dr. Henry A,
Mott, and later poor Dr. Love.
Brought. to a turn in this, the same company sought to use
the New York Board of Health.
It did not hesitate to send broadcast, the statement that the
New York Board of Health had endorsed and recommended the
Royal (Ammonia) Baking Powder.
It did not take the New York Board of Health very long
to assert itself on this misrepresentation as will be seen from the
foregoing letter.
These questionable methods of advertising have never
been resorted to by the Price Baking Powder Go. The oldfashioned honest way of making a pure Cream Tartar
Baking Powder is much to be preferred. No ammonia to
conceal, nothing to bolster up.
The success of Dr. Price proves honesty is the best
