Exalgine, however, has been engaging the attention of Dr. Bardet and Dr. DujardinBeaumetz, two French physicians who have been making an investigation into the therapeutic qualities, of this substance, While they agree as to the activity of the drug in destroying pain, the doctors are equally unapimous in their opinion as to the danger of its use. The new pain killer isa powerful poison as well as a sédative, and its action affects the brain, giving rise to violent convulsions like those of ‘epakjpoy. the moral of the findings of MM. Astoria has the largest and best harbor on the Pacific Coast, it has thirty large salmon canneries, two great iron foundries and a third foundry building, and iron miines close at hand to supply them with ore. The city has a government building with a custome bureau, and is the best location for extensive shipyards. These advantages render that city an attractive point for the investment of capital, and account for the rapid sale of those residence lots in North Pacific Addition to Astoria by The Oregon Land Co. of Salem and Portland. Smail,Fruit Farms. The Sunnyside tract of farm lands, } four miles south of Salem, was put cn the market in February last, and nearly all of the 650 acres, which comprise it, are sold. A few more 10-acre tracts remain, and nothing more desirable to the settler of limited means is to be found ‘around Salem. A small fruit farm in Sunnyside will soon become valuable property. Dubuque, Ia., has been treated to a great electrical storm, which was not attended by loss of life, though telegraph and telephone instruments were burned out and some damage was done to property. It is quite probable that the electric wires helped to protect the people from a storin of unusual violence. The great balls of fire that are reported to have exploded, doing no damage, have been observed before. Sometimes they are harmless, but more frequently they kill. As many as eight men have been killed at one stroke, and so instantaneonsly that their dead bodies have remained in the attitude of life.—New Orleans Picayune. A Needle in the Bone. A dispatch from British Columbia says that Miss Kelly, of New Westminster, imagined she broke her leg by a sudden movement of the limb. Doctors were called in and could discover no break, but decided to open an abscess which had developed near the supposed break. On an incision being made a large sized darning needle was found, the point of which penetrated the bone. The needle was removed and the young lady is rapidly recovering. She. has been lame since childhood, and it is supposed the needle entered her foot then and gradualiy worrcé nn to where it was found.
