th New Railroad Blow Its First Whistle
There Saturday.
Republican: The new railroad has
reached town. The first whiatle blown
in hearing of the town was last Saturday
eveuing from a point near the slaughter
house. The remainder of the track to
the Truckee Lumber Company’s dam was
completed today,
On March 18th the announcement was
made in these columns that articles had
been signed for the Donner and Tahoe
Railroad Company and that work wou'd
be commenced on the road immediately.
And today, being less than four months
from the time thé announcement was
made, the road is completed, which shows
cenclusively .that the Republican was
right in ite statement of March 18th.
Truckee is indebted to Mrs. Mary E.
Burckhalter for this new road and it is
to be hoped that the enterprise will bring
profic to her as well as to ‘Truckee, and
there is not the least doubt but what it
< Will,
:
___The Truckee Lumber Company has-al-}ready signed a contract to haul enough
saw-logs 9\ er the road to make ita profitable undertaking for the owner of the
road, As has been stated before it is one
of the largest logging contracts ever made
in the State. Fully one million feet of
loga will be hauled over this new railroad
during the next ten years. This .ne-cessitates that the Truckee Lumber Compaty’s factory run night and day for that
number of years, which means prosperity
for Truckee. °

Sacramento, July 11.—It is now
clainied that Fredericks, the supposed
slayer of Sherift Pascoe, is on his way
East. Railroad officers ‘Wave’ secured
Positive information showing that shortly after the killing of Shetiff Pascoe
Fredericks reached the railroad by a
circuitous route aud boarded. a train
bound East. The officers claim that
they know his objective point, and have
wired the authorities to arrest the fumoney market, the depression is not
materially felt by those whose prices for

Tissot shoring doubt -in the
minds of the officers as to whether Fred
cricks is guilty of the murder of Sherift
Pascoe. It is claimed by many that
the Sheriff, while hunting for the fugitive in the old mill at ‘Grass: Valley,
atumbled over a plank, and that in: falling his weapon was discharged, the “bullet making the fatal wound, he friends
vf the dead Sieriff scout this theory,
and are firmly convinced that he was
shot by Fredericks. :
Officers who have beerf -hunting for
the supposed murderer have learned pos.
itively that Frederickg secured the rifles and pistols which figured in the recent revolt at Folsom from a friend of
George Sontag who condugts a saloon in
Visalia, He claims that’ Fredericks
broke into his saloon and stole the arms,
but the officers are convinced ~that he
gave them to the ex-convict with the. ~
wuderstanding that he should secrete
them near the prison and then inform
Sontag. oe
It is known that after secreting the
weapons Fredericks traveled in the di-. *
rection of. Gold Rup, where he shot
Brakeman Bruce, who discovered him
“beating” his way on the: freight train.
Fredericks was armed with a 44-caliber Oolt’s revolver, and the fact that a
much smaller bullet killed the unfortunate Sheriff leads many to beliéve.that-}
he either accidentally shot himself or
was shot by one of his-men by mistake.

During the past two months there have
been a number of mining men hére from
lifferent parts of the United States, and
they all come to look at the mines in
this section: Some of them made known
their business without any privacy what
éver, While others were careful not to
say anything about the object of their
visit except in an indirect way. A few
lays ago a couple of Eastern mining men
came here and inspected some of the
‘nines aud made close inquiries regarding
thers. Before leaving they tuld a gentleman of this city that they: would most
likely return here before long and be
.prepared to invest in one or more properties. Yesterday two gentlemen from
3alt Lake arrived here -and soon after
took a buggy and drove out to look at
our mines, The great depreciation in
silver has been the means of stepping
many of the silver mines, and owners of
silver mines are now looking around for
gold mines to invest in. Nevada City,
and in fact. this whole county enjoys a
tirat-class reputation among mining men
throughout the United States, and we
would not be surprised to sée a boom in
uining properties here within the next
year,

Why is it that people in general are so
prone to disregard loss of strength, clearly
perceptible in bodily shrinkage; failure
