The Champion Mining Company has
declared another dividend. This grand
old mine is as regular in its dividends as
the Idaho of Grass Valley. Ten more
stamps are being added to the mill, and
the mine is looking fine. :

a banquet to some of his friends at the

Lyman Welch, the 17-year-old son of

his age.

That Road.
Unquestionably the road between this
city and Grass Valley is the worst of any
on the face of the earth, considering the
amount of tr:vel onit and the short distance. Froiu the corporation limits to
the Town Talk the dust is all the way
from three to tifteen inches deep. From
Town Talk to Grass Valley, while it is
not very dusty, it is rougher than any
piece of road in this county. ‘It ia really
too bad that a first-class road can not
be kept between the two towns. Way

A Woll-Known Young Man Falls’ a. Victim

The sad intelligence reaches us that
Edwin Sampson of Grass Valley died last
night at his home on the Nevada road, near
R. Noell’s place. Mr Sampson has beet
sick for some time, his disease being consumption, and his demise was not, therefore, unexpected. Deceased was°a native of England, ag+d thirty-five years,

James Bennallack's Residence Destroyed —

At 1 o'clock this morning a fire broke
ont in the tesidence of James Bennallaek
at Boston Ravine, which completely destroyed the house and nearly all the contents. Among other things lost in the
flames was a very valuable specimen
cabinet which Mr. Bemnallack has been
many years colcting. The tire had
gained such headway when the alarm was
given that the occupants of the dwelling
had barely time to escape.

Made a Confession.
Charles Lawrey, better known’ as
“Chieken Charlie,” who was arrested at
Grass Valley for stealing a lot of chickens
‘om aMrs. Crowley, has heen held to
answer before the Superior Court on a
charge of felony,. In conversation with
District Attorney Nilon he confessed that’
@ had been in the chicken-stealing lusiness for the prst four years. During
that time he has stolen and sold over
300 chickens, most of which were seeured at Grass Valley.
