They are waiting a ing the proposition on the market. ° At North tlooimtield, Moore's Flat, things are very quiet. ‘The law abiding citizens are Lopefully awaiting favurable action on the Caminetti bill, or some other measiire that may render it possible to resume their only industry without injury to other interests. ‘There is only a very small ininority who do not Tscognize the justice of the principles of the common law bearing on the hydraulic question, and the only danger is that the few radicals on either side, who: are disposed to ignore the interests of others in their clunor for prominence in advocating their own, may provuke a general uasunderstanding, as we re‘uember was the case in another vital issue that involved the whole nation. Serious misunderstanding s are quite common.” Among these there ig an impression that the levee, agitation progreasing in Sacramento is part and parcel of the Colasa anti-debris agitation. Agtin, because the Record-Uniun is publish din Sacramento, it is often assumed chat it ia radically and unconditionally “apposed to mining. ‘They often fail to réalize that the Kecord-Union occupies too important a position ‘as the representttive of great atid varied interests to take, 1arrow or selfish ground. As the leadtug journal of the city most affected and if the valley interested, it does not tail so see that an industry representing a hundred millions of capital, the only . livelihuod of a highly respected class of law-abiding citizens, and the general prosperity of the state, is worthy the consideration and aid of the General Gov erament, ‘Yo advogate the resumption of hydraulic mining under any. conditions aot likely to protect the valley and streams would be unjust to farmers and Ltail to accomplish anything for the niners. At Camptenville mining is very quiet, at the excellence ot their frait, as shown »y the recent competition with other seccons at the Marysville display,-is giving juite an impetus to this industry. ‘Carecul study needs to be directed to such prolucts-in this line as will tear cast and satfer no injury by transportation: — Citizens are too apt to direct their attention ¢o some particular fruit.or some isolated suse, and'say because that fruit spoiled ra the way or their neigibor failed to ind a market for his frvit, therefore there 's nothing in the business, With an ex 2sLlent climate, cheap land and dite’.es ready budt, but now useless for other Jarposes, it stands them ia hand to iavestigate carefully as to what branch of . vroduction will pay best in their lovality The United States Culture Station at Jackson, Amador county, should have some information to impart on these juestions. Forest City is presenting quite a lively ‘ppearauce as compared with its condi tions at my last visit, three years since. All buildings seem to be occupied and the town prosperous, Three miles’ horseback ride over a rough trail brought me to the “Ruby,” where. they gre very quietly working forty or fifty men in a grav.1 claim, whose tunnels run more than a mile under the mountain and branches off to follow the channel in both directions. Superintendent McCormick was attending person illy to washing the blue gravel, The mine has all the outward appearance of a solid, legitimate enterprise. They are stowing away a good stock of timbers for next winter’s work. Two miles from Forest City over a Very steep grade takes one to Alleghany, whose prospects are more encouraging than tor yeirs past. Intications point strongly toward the probability of the early erection of quagtz mills. Some very encouraging prospecting has been done, our iniles more takes us to the Bald Mountain Extension, where they have erected avery sulystantial plant aad have nearly two miles of tuntel, and are taking out enough to warrant a mouathly dividead of six thousand dollars, after providing: for all expenses and reserve fund. ‘Phe pro prictorg of the Mountain Messenger hold the happiest newspaper men we have met in a long time.
