A Heavenly Visiter.
Just now you can see a new comet in
the heavens. It is a comet that made
its appearance about Monday last. I:
can be seen in the northwestern heavens
at early evening and goes out of sight
about 11 o'clock, but this comet does
not form its ‘horrid hair shake pestilence and war,’’ but it is a beautiiul
thing to look upon as it burns upon the
brow of the heavens. “The dispatches
spoke of the heavenly visitor several
days ago, but Clifford Weldon saw the
comet before any of the papers spoke
about it.

deed tu see the new laws affecting .the
hydraulic ‘mining industry put into
speedy practical operation, so that these
mines may. resume work at once. That
the stoppage of these mines seriously affected the gold output of this State there
ean he no. question; and thet we need
all the gold we can get there can alsu be
Qo question. The gold in those grave!
bills is an available source, of supply
which we ought to draw Upon as s0on
as possible.
California stands pre-eminent aw the
great gold producing State of the Union,
having led all others in this branch of
mining ever since the first disouvery here,
Out of the aggregate of $33,000,000: in
gold: yielded by the mines of the United
. States last year California alone pro
duced $12,571,000 of thet metal, or over
one-third of the total. The next high
est gold producer of the States is Colo
rado,. which during the same year turned out about mx and a half millions.
This shows how far above the others our
own State stands in gold product.
That California is still able to maintain its position so far in the first rank
in this respect, notwithstanding the
-closing down of its producing hydraulic
mines in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river drainage basins, should be «
cause of congratulation, especially now
when so many silver and lead mines arc
closing down-all over the country. Bu
this-should-make our citizens use every .
vffort not only to maintain this annua!
gold preduct, but to increase it. That
i¢ean be increased by the working of
the auriferous gravel deposits is plain,
and the recent legislation shows that
there is evident desire. on the part oj
the State and Government. to see theae
mines again in operation.
the State has through its Governe:
and the Legislature, “asked Congress to
assist in the rehabilitation of. the hy‘raulic_mining industry of: California,
atid Congress has complied with the-requeat to the extent uf passing ® special
law and providing a special commission
of engineers to carry it out. The miners
theinselves must pay for the impounding
works required under the new law, no
appropriation having been made for any
‘uch works. The miners are. ‘merely
given permission te work under certain
conditions. and restrictions. Many of
them, I am told, will not be able to
build these works, from lack of means,
their mines having long been closed
down, and therefor profitless. More~
over,*the members. of the Engineering
Commission, having many other important duties to perform in connection
with river and harbor work, are unable
to give more than partial attention to
the mining question.
‘This is to be regretted and it is to be
hoped that measures of ‘relief wil be
asked for and applied. To rehabilitate
an industry so long dormant will require active steps on the part of all its
advocates and the citizens of the State
should lend euch assistance as they can.
Che possible addition of eight or ten
millions of new gold which these mines
could turn into the channels of commeror
and trade every year, if they were all
at work, would make a very decided
difference in our financial and ivdustria)
situation in this State. Joun McKxs,&

Why is it that people in general are so
prone to disregard loss of strength, clearl)
