A FATAL ACCILENT.
. Mrs. Fhelps Killed by a Team of. Horses
Running Away.
Last Saturday Mrs. Clara Phelps,
wife of Charles Phelps of Phelps Hill,
this county, was accidentaly killed
under most distressing circumstanc 8,
dnd the funeral-took place at 2 o'clock
yesterday afternoon from the Methodist
Church in this city.
Mrs. Phelps had been visiting Mra.
H. M. Place at Omega, and left there
Saturday with Mr. Placein a twohorse carriage for her home Mr.
Place had some business at Davis’s
Ranch in Bear Valley, and they drove
uround that way. They started for
Phelps’ Hill in the afternoen, and leaving the Valley stopped at a trough
about a third of the way up the grade
to water the horses. Mr. Place alight
ed and’ unchecking them let them
drink, Mrs. Phelps holding the lines.
He had checked one of them, and stepped on the trough to rein up the other’s
bridle. As he did so a boulder two
feet in diameter broke loose from the
bank above and rolled down towards
the trough. This frightened the horses.
They . whirled around suddenly and
sturted down the grade at a rapid run.
Mr. Place shouted to the lady to hold
the reins tight, following foot after the
runaways which soon passed around x
turn and out of sight. Fifty rods below the starting place he found a collapsed whe 1, evidently broken in
turning at the trough, and the pole.
Three or four hundred feet beyond
there was Mrs. Phelps lying insensible in the middle of the road. One
hundred feet still further down was
the balance of the wrecked vehicle.
Mr. Place picked up the lady’s inanimate form and carried it up to the
trough. As he laid her down she
looked up at him, apparently conscious but unable to speak. Her upper lip was cut and some of the teeth
broken, there was a gash on the temple, and two cuts in the back of the
head that penetrated the skull.
He got the carriage cushion and
placing it under her head made heras
comfortable as possib:e. He then went
onarun to Davis’s Ranch to obtain
aid, and upon getting there found that
Mr. Davis was just starting up the
grade to ascertain what had happened. The horses hai gone directly
down to the Ranch, and their. appearance had led the family to suspect
an accident had occurred. ,
They hurried back with a wagon,
and patting Mrs. Phelps into it started for the Ranch. When part . way
down she struggled viol-ntly and exc'aimed ‘‘Stop them! Stop them!”
These were her last words. When the
ranch was reached and the hat held
over her face to exclude from her eyes
the glare of the sun was removed,
she was dead.
Mrs. Phelps came to this county
from Pennsylvania about four years
ago, and was upon her arrival married
to Mr. Phelps in conformity.with an
atrangement made between them
through correspondence by letters.
They. were a devoted and happy
couple, andin her death Mr. Phelps
sustuins a severe loss.
A Disgraceful Demonstration.
Quite a procession of Salvatiomsts
paraded the streets of this city Sunday
evening. They were followed by a
howling, hooting mob. of boys who
k ptup a racket that drowned the
The svene was one of the most disgraceful ever witnessed in this city.
Said a gentleman from San Francisco
watching the proceedings: ‘‘Has your
town no peace officers? Have the
parents of those boys concern for their
future? Such proceedings would not
be tolerated in any other town on the
coast. I would not raise a family of
children in a place where hoodllumism thus runs rampant. Iam not a
religious man, neither do I have any
admiration for the methods of the
Salvationists. But I tell you, sir, that
a@ town without law, as this seems to
be if one can judge from tonight’s doings, cannot hope to prosper, neither
does it deserve to.’’ The visitor was
right in most of his remarks. Such
lawlessness cannot be too strongly condemnéd,.and the self-respecting element of the community should insist
upon its suppression. The question as
to whether the Salva‘ionists are rizht
or wrong in their methods has néthing
te do with the matter. Other denominations have what-appear to some people to be just as absurb ways of worshipping God,

all enjoying themselves ‘‘hugely,’’ if
one muy use that word.

Death of Mrs. Thomas, Formerly of This
: City, in St. Louis.
a
The San FranciseqChronicle of Saturday says:
The sad intelligence of the death of
Mrs. E. B. Thomas, wife of Edward
B. Thomas, reached this city yesterday morning. Mr. Thomas, accompanied by his w fe, left this city to attend the National Ericampment of tie
Grand Armv of the Republic, being a
member of Thomas Post. On reaching St. Louis Mrs. Thomas became ill
and died there on Thursday night at
9 o’clock. The deceaxed resided with’
her husband at 2514 Siockton street
in this city for a number of years, and
leaves a largecircle of friends to
mourn her loss.
Her son, a young man of 20 years
of age, and an adopted daughter are
now in this city and were left in
charge of the household during the
absence of the parents. It was the
intention of Mrs. Thomas to visit her
relatives in the East, whom she had
not seen for many, years, but she did
not live to reach her destination. She
was very highly respected in this city.
Mrs. Thomas formely resided at this
city where her husband kept what is
known as the City Hotel. She was a
sister to Mrs. H. C. Mills of this city.
“The Golden Giant.”
Next Monday evening the Osburne
& Stockwell'Company, from the Alcazar Theatre of San Francisco, will
produce at this city Clay Greene’s
new play,‘The Golden Giant.” The
San Francisco Post says {of it: ‘It is
beyond question the most powerful
work of the kind presented in this
city in years. The sad, strong scenes
are deftly relieved by clever comedy,
and the startling effects of the thrilling situations and climaxes are; in
marked contrast to the sparkling effervescence of those in which pleasanter
phases of Western life and characte
are represented. The feelinge of the
audiences are so wrought upon by the
scenes, that outbursts of applause are
frequent and long continued. The
cast embraces all the favorites of Osbourne and Stock well’s Comedy Company, and each in lividaal mem er
plays his or her p -rt for all it is worth.
The scenery and effects are excelient.”

Henry Best and George Wa‘ton,
farmers_in the vicinity of Yuba City,
arrived here Sunday in company with
A. B. Woodruff, the anti-mining “spy.
They left the s meday ona tour of the
gravel mining regions, to see for themselves just how much slickens is being
dumped into the rivers. These gentlemen will of course meet witn courteous
treatment from the miners, and thus
have proof that the man who said at
Marypville recently that the valleyite
who went among the hydraul:ckers
risked his life in so doing, is a monumental prevaricator.
Poetical Consolation.

“Tell me, ye anxelic hosts, ye messengers of love, shall swindled printers here below have noredress above ?”’
