The Gigantic Task ofa Few Sierra
County Miners.
Saturday says: Do any of our readers
rocollect the.amount of capital. named in
the prospectus:of the. company formed in
London some years ago to bring out the
old Allison Ranch Mine of Nevada
county? The question is suggested by
the statement now going the rounds of
the local press that the owner, @ Mr.
Davis, has ccnsistently asked the sum of
$60,000 for the property, which is said to
possess some merit. If memory serves
aright, the value placed upon the mine
by the London promoters was £150,000.

A Review of Nevada City’s Rich Min: eral Resources.
B. J. Watson contributes to the special
edition of the Grass Valley Tel&raph an
article upon the mining resources of this
township. In the course of it he says :
The quartz district surrounding Nevada
City begins a mile and a half below the
town, and extends up Deer Creek two
and ahalf miles above the town to the
Federal Loan and Constitution mines.
There is a mother lode circling around
the basin on the south side of the basin,
following the contact between slate and
granite, which can be traced for nearly
three miles. On this lode is located the
Merrifield and Providence mines, the latter of which has mint receipts for nearly
four million dollars for bullion shipped
from the mine. The Merrifield has also
been a large gold producer, though not as
extensively worked as the Providence.

Prof. F.,O. Young of San Francisco,

Young is also one of the best rifle marksmen on the coast.
WHAT THEY SAY
The shareholders of the Bald Mountain
Extension Gravel Company of Downieville are highly elated over the . success
which has attended their prospecting
operations. “After long and tedious work,
attended with the expenditure of a large
sum of money, they have atlast struck it
rich, and there is every prospect at present that their untiring efforts and patient
determination to find a mine or go baykrupt in the attempt will meet. with a
fitting reward. It is seldom that one
ow meets with-such an exhibition of
grit in mining operations, and it is safe to
say that many a wealthy corporation
would have retired in disgust, if brought
face to face with difficulties which from
time to time have been met and _overcome by this plucky little band of Sierra
county miners. It required a confidence,
is still a dividend—payer. These cross
ledges ‘at a certain depth either encouitered hard country rock, a split ledge or
ore of a poor quality, and work on them
was suspended. The Mountaineer mine
found the same condition of affairs at
about the same depth, but the superintendent, instead of closing down, as his predecessors in the granite belt had done,
pushed on down and was rewarded by
fifiding gootl rock and a solid ledge.
There is no doubt but what if the other
mines ii the belt were similarly treated,
similar results would be obtained.
While the mines of this district have
for three or four years been passing
through a vioissitude ‘peculiar to all mining districts, viz., a cessation of work
from one cause or another, it is certain
that a new era has begun, and it will not
only to be acquired bypractical experibe long before there will be an activity
ence to undertake what would be consid-]. here never seen in the palmiest days of

all other levels, are looking exceedingly
well, The amount of quartz exposed and
in sight is simply astonishing. There is
enough quartz blocked out at present to
run the thirty stamp mill for the next ten

sinking and drifting. This ledge can simply bury a thirty stamp mill, and it will
only be a question of a short time when
another hundred stamps will have to be

The miners working there, estimate . the
value of the quartz at from seven to eight
