Circulating the Gospel.
The Salvation lassie ‘that isin charge
of the Army in this city (she is really
handsome, by the way) was agreeably
surprised to find a Grass Valley man here
who bought up her whole stock of ‘‘War
Crys” and then proceeded to distribute
the same by placing one in each of the
pigeon holes of our most prominent news
agent's distribution benches. It occurred
this way: The news agent jokingly insisted that the Grass Valley man should
buy a ‘War Cry” from the lady -who was +
making the rounds selling papers. The
“Grass Valley man agreed to buy the
whole lot provided that. he could utilize
the pigeon holes of the agent’s customers
as a mode of distribution, and the bargain
was at once consummated to the great delight of. the lassie, who Went om her way
rejoicing. This is how so many of the
news agent’sS~ustomers ‘found ‘War
Crys” in. their ‘pigeon holes when they
went to get their Daily Examiners,

Two Accidents.
Tidings: Albert Thomas, a lad deformed by reason of culvature of the spine,
was accidentally run over by a-carriage
Thursday evening, the wheels passing
across his back. He was taken into Dr.
Jamieson’s office, and upon examination
it was revealed that he had miraculously
escaped serious injury. It is a wonder
. that his curved spine was not broken.
Dr. Jones was called to North San
‘Juan yesterday morning by a telegram
from John German to the effect that ono
of his (German’s) little sons had broken
a leg.
“Wak and weary,” describes the
condition of many people debilitated by
the warm weather, by disease or overwork. Hood’s Sarsaparilla is just the
medicine needed to build up and strengthen the body, purify and quicken the
sluggish blood,-and_restore--the lost-appetite. ‘

THE STATE FAIR.
What Secretary Smith has to Say
About It:
The Thirty-eighth, Annual State Fair
of California will be held at. Sacramento,
commencing Monday, September 7th, and
ending Saturday, September 19th.
These annual occurrences are referred
to by the management with pride, as
under the jurisdiction of the State Agricultural Society they have prospered for
nearly-four decades, and it is their intention to continue them in a progressive
manner. each season.
The two weeks set apart for this great
event of 1891 will be devoted to the exhibition of California’s resourees and to
recreative amusement, to relieve it of the
dullness of an ordinary bazaar.
The multitude visit this exhibition,
as it has earned itself the distinction of
being both instructive and entertaining.
No other exhibition present the same advantages. = :
Drawing, as it does, upon the producfive constituency of the State, insures to
exhibitors the attention their display
merits, and likewise it gives an assurance
to the visitor that the resources of the State
in their varied forms will be shown.
To those who have exhibited at the!
State Fair very littlended be said; but to
those who have not we would call attention to the following-points, which will
commend themselves at once:
1, The California State Fair has been
successfully established for thirty-seven
