Some of the Alleged Attractions of that Part of Nevada County. A. V. Hoffman of this city continues to write humorous articles for the Sunday Record-Union. In his -latest he says, among other things: Pleasant Valley, where I was born, isa pleasant place insummer, It is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, below the pine timber belt, but in the citrus belt, the quartz belt, the turkey belt, and the polecat belt. There are more polecats in Pleasant Valley than in any other séction of Nevada county, and it keeps the ranchers busy raising chickens to saticfy the voracious appetites of those amusing little insects. The polecat is another product of nature fer which I cau see no use. He is very.ornamental and adds greatly t6 the beauty of ~a landscape, at a distance of a few furlongs; but he is. too familiar, investigative and beneficent, as well as distinktive, when viewed more closely. Asa pet, he is a failure.’ Society may worship the poodle but it will never tolerate the polecat, and the sooner this great truth is-recognized the better, And. yet there are polecats in society. Pleasant Valley is essentially a settlement! of ranchers, who raise hay, cattle, chikdren atfd other live stock. Some of the residents have béen .in Pleasant Valley since 1849, and are enormously rich, bavingmanaged to acquire several sections of land, around wkich they have placed several hundred thousand miles of barbed wire fence, which the same is a pastime toclimb. Gettingon the rageed edge in politics is nothing like getting on the ragged edge of a barbed wire fence. In Pleasant Valley there is a man who once boldly asserted, and even swore, that he would never marry, because he hated children, But he was mistaker in himself. He has been a married man for teh years, and nas had two, wives, *He is still vigorous, although he is the father of fourteen children. He was married with amurket to begin with, and now, when he wishes to ascertain the > identity of his youngest child, he standsihem allup against the wallin . the kitehen-and uses-a-epirit-level.— There is another father in Pleasant Paut Quick Of Badger Hill will be a candidate forthe office of County Treasurer subject to the ceomes of the Kepublican County Convenon. Wheb Cupid came to him one day and-jabbed his spear into his heart, lights and liver, and then went away bamming a verze from Litule Annie Rooney, the poor young bachelor was sore distressed. Like Mr. Fiske, of Fresno, he was fond of shekels, and he was afraid that mar“lriage would lesaen his hoard. He loved the girl, but be also loved his gold, and for a long time pondered over the problem until his nead ached, He would think and think about it and, going into the room where his treasure was : “One cautiousglance around he stole, One awful wink he wunk; : And then a terrible smile he smoie, And hia bags of chink he cbunk,’: An idea‘ at last entered his weary brain, and he hit upcn a plan. Mr. Eprron: At the risk of indorsing @ proprietary preparati ; I have a few words im favor of a new laxative principle. Bus first, how I came to discover it. A patiens asked about taking Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparille, As sersaparilias usually contain mercury or iodides I objected, and asked fot the formula, which finding purely vegetable, and so mild as to be to my mind almost iyert, I consented. Imagine my astonishment when perfect laxative action was re ported. It has two great points. First, being r purely vegetable, it is (unlike mercury) not it is effective with a less quantity of the cathartic principle than has hitherto been attainable. It in this respect ranks as @ discovery, and approaches the ideal, vis.: e least medicine consistent with the great= good.
