GES . thier; Streets, ® ~~ * aes se NEVADA TRANSCRIPT. } FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1891. A Severe Law. The English people look more closely to the genuineness of these staples than we do. In fact, they _ have a law under v/which they make seizures and de stroy adulterated products that are not what they are‘represented to be. Under this statute thousands of pounds of tea have been burned because of their wholesale adulteration. Tea, by the way, is one.of the most notoriously adulterated articles of commerce. Not alone are the bright, shiny green teas artificialiy colored, but thousands of pounds of substitutes for tea leaves are used to swell the bulk of cheap teas; ash, sloe, and willow ‘loaves being those--mostcommonly used. Again, sweepings from tea warehouses are colored and sold as tea. Even exhausted tea leaves gathered from the tea-houses are kept, dried, and made over and find their wayinto the cheap teas. ee ‘the English government attempts to stamp this out by confiscation; but no tea is too poor for us, and the result is, that probably the poorest teas used by any nation are those Ameriea:—— A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. Twenty-five Persons Killed on an Ohio Railroad This Morning. SacrAMENTO, July 3, 1891. The Evening Bee’s* Cleveland (Ohio) special says: One of the most terrible railroad accidents ever known within the Western Reserve occurred about 2:30 o'clock this morning at Ravenna, Ohio. A fast freight train crashed into the rear of a passenger train. Twenty-five ‘persons were killed and more than thirty wounded. Fire added to the terrors of the wreck and many people were literally . roasted to death before the eyes of those who were attempting to rescue them. 8 EEE ROUGH AND READY. A Young Lady’s Ideas of the Old Town. A young lady who has been visiting ’at Rough and Ready sends to the Marysville Democrat some notes and jottings of her observations while there, from which are taken the following extracts : Rough and Ready-is notable for the soieties which it supports. An Odd FelBeech’s Tea is presented with the guar anty that it is uncolored and unadulterated; in fact, the sun-cured tea leaf pure and simple. Its purity insures superior strength, about one third less of it being required for an infusion than of the artificial teas, and its fragrance and exquisite flavor is at once apparent. It will bea revelation to you. In order that its purity and quality may be guaranteed, it is sold only in pound packages bearing this trade-mark: THEY MUST PAY. Scarcely Any Person Exempt From Paying Poll-Tax. The poll-tax collectors are having considerable trouble in making their colleclows’ Lodge, Rebekah ‘Degree Lodge, Templars and Farmers’ Alliance. The Odd Fellows have a pretty little hall . painted white, with a classic front like that of the United States Treasury building at Washington. It-is located on the side of the hill to the north of the main street, and surrounded by nice trees and is-very pretty. The Farmers’ Alliance -has been in existence here only alittle more than a month, but it already has a large membership for a place of this size. The principal buildings of the town are located along the main réad leading from Marysville to Grass Valley, and a number of them built of stone. At_ onetime there-was much business done here, when the ravines and hills were covered with miners taking out the precious metal. In 1850 the town, with others, voted on the question of locating a county seat, and this place only lacked three votes of seeuring it, and—it-went—to-Nevada_City, } THE GLENBROOK RACES. Further Particulars of the Blaze at North Bloomfield. Judge Marriott sends the TRANSCRIPT the following account of the fire at North Bloomfield on Wednesday. He says: A disastous fire occured here today by which all of Chinatown, except one building, was destroyed. It originated in a China washhouse, but how nobody knows. Flames were discovered coming from the roof of a washhouse, and by the time water could be turned on three buildings were a mass of fire. Two streams wereobtained from the town water works, to which circumstance added to moving two buildings, may be ascribed the fact that the string ‘of buildings on tea south side of our town) were saved. Too much “praise cannot be given to those who aided, and especial mention must be maile--oy heroic acts performed by Ram. Carter, J. H. O'Connor, Ham. Watson, A. J. Carter, W. L. Mobley and Fred Brown. By their acts and the avoided.. Had they not displayed such energy anid deeds of daring in rushing into and pulling down houses which were all on fire, thereby partially subduing the flames and preventing’ the fire from reaching any of the other buildings of our town, very many of our citizens “would now be cogitating over and deploring a severe and irreparable. loss. Chinatown was situated south of and distant about séventy feet from the south side of Main and east of Mill street. Had any one of the-buildings on either of these streets caught, the town, or the greater part of it, would now be w mass of smouldering ruins. The Chinamen have evidently suffered great loss, little or nothing having been saved, the fire communicated from one building to another se rapidly. This is no good time for fires, the thermometer recording 96 degrees in the shade. What few people will be left at home here on the glorious Fourth will be lonely. Grass Valley and North Columbia are alluring our citizens to those places, promising all sorts of things for that day. the efforts of our energetic citizens in re© assistance given a great calamity wes— reer co The Pulpit and the Stage. zn Rev. F. M. Shroct, Pastor United Brethren Church, Blue Mound, Kan., says: “I feelit my duty to tell what wonders Dr. King’s New Discovery. has done for me. My Lungs were badly diseased, and my parishioners thought I could live only a few weeks. I took five bottles of Dr. King’s New Discovery and am sound and well, gaining 26!bs in weight.” Arthur Love, Manager Love’s Funny Folks Combination, writes: ‘‘After a through trial and convincing evidence, I am confident Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consumption beats ‘em all, and cures when everything else fails. ia that of running sores on the arms, legs, or feet. Bunches in the glands of the fleck, pimples, cancerous growths, swollen joints, and thickening of the upper lip, are other symptoms. Hood’s Sarsaparilia has had wonderful success in curing scrofula. It thoroughly eradicates the humor from the blood, and gives it new vitality and richness. Mrs. William McDonald, Wooster, 0., for eighteen months. suffered with scrofu-lous swellings of the glands in the neck. Hood’s Sarsaparilla gave immediate relief, the swellings being largély reduced. : Swellings in the Neck. Joseph Dunphy, 214 Central Street, Lowell, Mass., had swelling? and lumps on his neck and face, which various pastes, ointments and medicines failed to stop. A shopmate, whose wife had been cured of a sore.on her arm by Hood’s Sarsaparilla, recommended the medicine, and he bought a Vottle. In three days there was a change in the eruption, ‘and five bottles effected a complete cure, leaving the skin smooth and fair.
