OR RAR BE EO Ea SI n eee THE. DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. L. 8. CALKINS, N.P. BROWN, EDITOR. BUSINESS MANAGER. TUESDAY EVENING, JULY 7, 1891. For Over Half a Century. Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup has been used for over fifteen years by millions of mothers for their children while teething, with perfect success. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, cures wind colic, and is the best remedy for diarrhea. Sold by Druggists in every part AT ORMONDE. The Washington mine and mill hada day or two previous to the 4th closed down for a week in order to give all the employes a chancé to celebrate the day in their own way and: fashion. ~During the day Mrs. Tregidgo was the recipient of a very fine lot of table silver ware presented to her presumably for her good —hghavior during the current “year, which is clear proof.to my mind that it is much better to be born lucky.than rich. At 6 o’clock P. M. a sumptuous spread was given by the host‘and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Tregidgo, to a large number of invited guests. ‘Among the visitors were Mr. and! Mrs. Wm. Giffin of Nevada City. After thes eat and drink, toasts, rosponses and songs were the order of the evening till closing time when all left for their homes well pleased with their day’s sport. The entertainment wound up with an exhibition of fireworks given by Messrs.Hattonand Williams. It consisted of a large brush heap set on fire with a few bunches of Chinese fire_crackera ‘on the sides. Dos Car1os. Give the Boys a Show. Here is something from ~-the—pen~of.a well-known writer on outdoor sports :— ‘To the best of my belief no boy ever learned any harm while either fishing or shooting,-and I would unhesitatingly advise parents to encourage in their sons a taste for field sports, and an admiratiou of all manly pastimes. But good, “sounc common sense should govern the teaching of the young people, and before giving.a] boy a gan and permission to tse it, YT would:advise a careful study of his cliaracter and disposition. If careless anc reckless he is no fit guardian for a deadls weapon ; but if he has sense and caution enough to be trusted there is no good r-ason why he ghould not have a gun oi his own. J., tells in very entertaining verse the story of Tom Bowers, a queer character who lived on Misery Hill, in the Sierras, who, while out prospecting, was caught under a caving bank .anc buried, and whose ghost, it was believed, haunted Misery Hill ever after that. This and the other ‘poetic sketches tha make up the book are all inspired by thc air of the Sierras and the mountain camp, aud are very readable. Au Enterprising Young Man. E: H.
