Tunws—-18 Cents a Week ; 60 Cents Month ; $6 a Year. ; NT WEDNESDAY EV’'N’G, JULY 8, 1891. f AMALICIOUS SLANDER. Certain Citizens of Santa Cruz Malign Our Boys in Blue. {Sacramento News of Last Evening.) The News has it from ‘reliable authority that Colonel Guthrie has been unable to secure a donation from the city of Santa Cruz to in part pay jthe expenses of their outing this season. — The citizens of the city by the sea have been contributing $700 to each of the regiments that go into camp their. They, however, are partial to the San Francisco, Oakland and Stockton boys and speak of the «First Artillery regiment as hoodlums. — The Sacramento, Nevada City and Woodland companies are all composed of good men and citizens, who know how toand do behave themselves. } However, a military gentleman, one who has served years in the First Artillery and is a. member of that regiment now, says on a recent visit to Santa Cruz he was pained to hear it referred to by leading Santa Cruz citizens as California’s hoodlum regiment. ; [The true inwardness of the ‘situation seems to be that the Adjutant General ordered the First Regiment into camp at Santa Cruz without consulting Col. Guthrie and giving the latter an opportunity to first canvass that town for a ‘‘bonus.” Hence the Santa Cruz people assume there is no necessity for their contributing as give nothing.—Eprror TRaNscrirr. .
