WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 1890. ”
In aetna ei ei re ener.
Out as an independent.
Hon. F. D. Soward of Sierra county
ia out as an independent candidate for
re-election to the Superior Judgeship.
He says in a card to the press:
Ireceived my nomination heretofore,
under the-Crawford plan, which gave
the voters the opportunity of expressing themesel yes upon all the candittates
in the field.
Now, by reason of alleged.combinations made against me,:by reason of
the promise exacted -by the Central
Committee of Republican voters at the
primaries, and by reason of the apportionment of delegates, a fair expression of the Republican party cannot
be had under ‘the Convention plan.
Believing that the majority of the
voters desire me to serve a second term
as Judge (I have held the office for one
term only) I make this announcement,
thus giving the voters a fair chance of
expression at the polls in November
next, untrammelled by party leader
and uncorrupted by’party ‘hoss.’ Besides, the Judge’s office should not be
: drawn into politics. Each voter is as
.well qualified to say who he wants for
1, Judge as is a delegate toa convention
' to choose for him. The candidate for
Judge should not be calied upon to
make the alliances and combinations
usually necessary to a success before a
convention. I stand upon my record,
whether for me or against me. If Iam
defeated at the polls, I will know that
the people do not want me; were I defeated before a convention I would
never have the satisfaction of knowing this; and let it be remembered
that;this is my first ex-public announce1 ment of my candidacy in. this behalf.
j I have submitted to no convention.’’

A Political Autherity.
C5 With the issue for June 26th the
: New York ‘‘Nation’’ closed the twenty-fifth year of its existence. It wasa
pioneer in this country as an independent weekly review of politics and
literature, and has long been a recognized authority at home and abroad.
Ithas remained under-one manage‘ment from the first number to the
7 present day, and its list of contributors during the twenty-five years of its
publication has included most of the
leading names in literature, science,
art, philosophy and lawin this country, and many of corresponding
eminence in Europe. A bound volume
of the ‘Nation’ presents one of the
most complete and accurate condensed
rent history, with impartial comment
on questions which should occupy the
attention of thoughtful men.

Sierra CityTribune: Last Saturday
Constable Pellow went down after
Tom Rich, who was arrested at North
Bloomfield. The trial came off the
gamé day before Justice Hartley, who
sentenced the defendant to thirty days
in the county jail and $60 fine. Rich’s
offence was kicking some glass out of
the front of Mrs. Lamar’s saloon.

Garfield’s Sons.
James A. Garfield has been spending
a@ few days in this city, having come
upon a triple mission. He grows to resemble his father physically, as he is
said to do intellectually, more than any
of the other children. The resemblance,
however; is not so apparent when he is
obliged to use his eyes closely, because
he has been compelled to wear specta

those whose interests compelled him in
part to visit this city the Garfield boys
have certainly done amazingly well.—

Food for Epicures.
The feature of this week’s market has
been the arrival of large invoices of doe
birds and golden plover. Both are in exeellent condition. The doe bird winters
in the extreme southern portions of South
America. It comes north in the spring,
stopping if the weather is favorable. in
Nebraska and adjoining territories, fattening rapidly, and then comes to the far
north to nest and hatch.
Boston goslings and ducklings are a
treat at present for the epicure. The
gosling is very large in frame, but littk
meat is to be got off it at’ present. Although a gosling weighs about ter
