A BOOM TOWN.
—
A Few Words About the Beautifal Town of
Truckee.
The town of Truckee, this county, is
getting to be the liveliest town in the
State. The business and the ;reat attractions there are drawing a very large
number of people to that section thi
summer, and we would not be surprised
sive gentleman, Hon, C, F. McGlashan,
contemplated changing the spicy Kepub:

Why Not Here?
At Grass Valley the people are treated
every Saturday evening to an open-air
concert. One or the other of the two
bands, and sometimes both, play for a
couple of hours. Nevada City has a
fine band, but they don’t practice enough
in the open air. During the summer we
ought to have music on the streets or
from seme b: leony at least once a week,
and if funds are necessary a subscription
should be taken up.

The ‘Question Answered,
At the meeting of the 4th of July
Committee held at Grass Valley last
evening the Invitation’ Committee was
instructed to ascertain as soon as possible what Nevada City intended doing
about attending the celebration at that
place. We will answer for Nevada City
and save the Invitation Committee some
trouble, as they undoubtedly have their
hands full of other matters. Nevada
City will send down two or three hun-,
dred vniforn.ed men for the procession,
and about three thousand men, women
and children to swell the crowd on the
public thoroughfares, and make business
lively for the quartz town on that occa
sion, Can we do more? If so, say so,
and we will meet the request. It is
Grass Valley’s day and we are bound to
boom it.

Hank Place Wins His Case in-the Supreme
Court.
The ease of Gaylord, assignee, vs.
Place and wife, has just been decided
by the Supreme Court in favor of detendants. Place by reason of. injunctions against hydraulic mining, was
forced to apply to the court fora discharge in insolvency and Geo, OC, Gaylord was appointed assignee by the creditors. Place and his wife had a homestead on the hydraul ¢ mine, both. residing thereon, The creditors insisted that
no homestead could exist on a mining
claim and Gaylord was obliged to instiute suit to set it aside, The Superior
Court decided against Place and the
latter appealed to the Supreme Court.
The decision is a sweeping one and
orders the Superior Court to enter, judgment*for the defendants without ary
further trial. A. Burrows was Place’s
attorney in the contest.

when he went to dig the treasure up it
was gone,
Lubeck does not think the money was

Tn looking over the list of dividends
paid by Mining Companies in the United
States for May, 1823, published in thNew York Mining and Engineering Journal for June, 1893, we find on the list
three Grass Valley mines besides several
others in the county. The Idaho is putdown for $7,750 and has paid since January Ist, $38,750. The North Star-did
not pay a dividend during May, but has
paid $50,000 since January Ist. The
W. ¥. O-'D, is listed ‘or $3000 and
has paid $15,000 since January Ist.
The Morning Star at Iowa Hill is on
the list as as is also the Champion at
Nevada City. While these figures represent only afew of our mines there are
several others which are on a paying basis and altogether this county makes a
better showing than any other county in
the State.
A young Grass Valley gentleman who

time and at first it was thought was
seriously injured, He still lives to tell
the story, but he~did not tell it to us.

General Tolman Talis of Mining Debris
and Swamp Lands.
General George B. Tolman answers
some questions which the Call put to
him some cays ago in respect to the
amount of inining debris that could be
applied to levees and swamp lands.
General Tolman’s statement is in brief
as follows: From Carquinez Straits to
Red Bluff the Sacramento river has over
300 miles of tule swamps and overftowed
lands, This gives a river frontage of
over 600 miles. About one-half this
river frontage needs.-to be leveed. i
levees of sutlicient dimensions sre con=
structed the requirement. would le at
least 300,000 cubic yards to the mile,
About the same amount of material
would be required on the San Joaquin.
In addition to all these river'levees, there
are nearly, 2,000,000 acres of tule swamp
and overflowed lands. which will need
from theeé to ten feet of material to raise
them toa water level,
Theexact amount of material which in
this way can be made use of ean, of
course, be determined only by actual
surveys. It would run up into the thousands of millions of cubic yards. General Tolman makes no estimate of tle
amount of material the Sicrra gravel
range would afford, but when we gonsider that the range varies from. 5) to
500 feet in depth and extends along a
large proportion of the eastern border of
the State, and isin places miles in width,
it will appear to the non-professional
observer that, large as the demand for
mat ral may be, the supply will le
larger. But, ifa plan of operation cau
be devised to handle this debris 80 as to
‘keep it out of the vrivers and bays, hydraulic mining will become a_compara=
tively remo edanger. The Call realizes
the hardship the cessation of this method
of mining has inflicted upon individuals
and wilt gladly —welcoime ay Well-con
