What a Nevada County Lady Knows
of the Science of House
Cleaning.
Mrs. Maude Peaslee, the talented
teacher of the French Corral school,
gives these pointers to her housekeeping sisters; :
I wonder how many houses are
being cleaned to-day! Itisa pleasant
‘sonshiny morning and there: is just
enough breeze to make one feel braced
up for work. We are just through
with ours, and during the two weeks I
was so occupied I learned several
things by experience that will surely
be of help to some one else.
One of the first things I did was to
clean out allclo sets, bureau drawers,
boxes--and trunks.. While—.the.con-.
tents of these receptacles hung flappingin the breeze out in the sunny
backyard, I made a very thorough
search for moths or bugs of a similar
nature. I dusted and wiped out every
trunk and box and renewed the paper
lining of all that needed such attention. I like best the strong wrappingpaper from the grocery to line trunks
and boxes. ‘It is then véry easy to
keep out moths. Well, I pasted the
paper in with thin flour paste, and,
leaving them to dry, began work on
closets and bureau drawers. LEverything washable was treated to a generous bath, I used greatcare in cleaning out these places. If there were
any moths there, [ meant to find them.
Ileft the insides of the closet-doors
clean and had plenty of time to rest
:. before beginning on my afternoon’s
work,
The gude mon of the house brought
them over and put them away.
All the flannels and heavy winter
dresses and wraps could be carefully examined and packed away.
My favorite moth preventive is camphor, andI put plenty of the gum in
amongall the clethes. I took pains
to leave such clothing as we might
need during the summer conveniently
clothing that was of no use to me I gave
away to deserving poor people, and
put in suitable places all I wanted to
mend or otherwise renovate. .
With the inside of the bureaus in
irreproachable conditien, I was ready
to attend to its outside surface; accordiugly, all my pedroom furniture
was next cleaned, the other furniture
taking its turn afterward.
The stained furniture had some
whitish spots on them. To remove
them, I rubbed on common kerosene
with a cloth, and followed this. with
another good rubbing with a cloth
dipped in whisky. The effect on most
of them.was wonderful. Some of the
deeper stains needed camphor and
turpentine.
My real oiled walnut set received a
different treatment. I rubbed it thoroughly with raw linseed oil, and it lost
all the dinginess that had distressed
me for some time.
I next undertook to remove the
marks left on my piano by restless,
childish fingers. A friend had told’
me Icould wash it, but it was with fear
and trembling that I tried it, I took
asoft cloth wrung out of clean, cold
water-and washed-it, a small portion
at a time, and instantly dried and
polished it with another cloth, I then
used my chamois skin quite freely on
it and was highly pleased with the result, If the marks are but light, they
may te removed by breathing on the
surface andthen rubbing quickly and
well with a chamois skin or old soft
cloth.
;
My marble-top table was sadly stained. I covered it with a thick coat of
gum-arabic and left it to dry in the sun
and wind. Before long I could peel
this coating off, and most of the impurities came with it. A second coat
was notentirely successful, so I covered it with athick paste made of soap
and whiting: —Thie—proved. effective,
so I did not need to send it to the marble dealer, as I should have done if
necessary.
I next turned my attention to my
pictureframes: and chandeliers. Following a friend’s advice, I washed
them thoroughly in some strong
onion-water in which I used enough
flowers of sutphur to give it a golden
tinge. This was supposed to keep the
flies from lighting on them. So far it
has proved highly effectual, and there
is not the least perceptible odor. As
the gilding, or more properly~ the
bronzing, of the chandeliers was
badly marred and worn, I painted
them all with a mixture of bronze
powder and copal varnish the druggist
prepared for me,
After all this wasdone, it was very
quick work to take up and shake the
carpets, wash paint and windows, and
get the nice clean furnitare arranged
to suit me.
Talao learned from my friend that

An Astonishing Offer—Some of the
Replies.
The San Franciseo papers of recent date
eontained the following offer: —
“As an evidence of thé-ability.of Joy's
Vegetable Sarsaparilla to prevent sick headaches, we will give to the first twelve responsible persons who will apply at our office
a bottle free if they will that after
they have been cured that they will admit
the fact over their signatures.”
This offer so startlingly asserted the effisiency of the remedy that many accepted,
and the letters of the parties, nearly all of
whom responded, are probably the most
convincing attestations that any remedy
real estate in that city is quite) ever received. The following is a sample of

Wherever Malaria Exists,

The importance of purifying the blood cam.
not be overestimated,. for without pure
blood you cannot enjoy good health.
At this season nearly every one needs a
good medicine to purify, vitalize, and enrich
the blood, and Hood’s Sarsaparilla is worthy
ydur confidence, It is peculiar in that it
strengthens and builds up the system, creates
an appetite, and tones the digestion, while
it eradicates disease. Give it a trial.
Hood's Sarsaparilla is sold by all druggists.
