THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. TUESDAY EV'NG, JUNE 13 "9, PROSPEROUS MINING TOWN. And One That Contributes Much Trade to seven-inch pamp will be put in at once, Thursday last the Democrat mentioned the fact that W. W. Stow had on that/ Chisholm and his neice, Miss Nannie day made proof and payment in the United Land Office on land embraced in % 4 ale eee tye claim owned by him near F orbestown, koown as the G 1d Bank Quartz Mine, Tunis property is located a short distance north ef the Yuba county line, and about four miles from Brownsville. There are several other valuable mines located in this same range, among which is the “R. C.” mine, near Brownsville, now being worked under the superintendency of J.C. Campbell. The “Gold Bank Mine” is in charge of H. P. Stow, a son of W. W. Stow, of San Francisco, who is now having erected at. Forbestown a fine res— idence which will cost several thousand : dollars. Mr. Stow employs an average of eighty-five men in the conduct of the mine, and the wages paid are three dollars a day, the men receiving their pay every Saturday if desired. Including lumber, labor, timber and wood the sum expended monthly in the conduct of the Gold Bank mine is $8,000, which, of it self isa big item in a small place like Forbestewn. This mine isa very valua~ ble piece of property, yielding from the ene ledge, copper, silver and gold, the gulphates being treated . to the roasting . process to secure all ef the precious metal. The mine at present, with its twenty stamps, produces not less than $1,200 daily, or from $36,000 to $40,000 . per month, with an apparent endless amount of gold-bearing quartz. The hoisting works and house were burned about two months ago, and were at once ““yeplaced with a bet‘er plant, and now taking the whole work frem the timbering of the incline to the plates for saving ~ the gold, the roasting and assaying de-. , partments all present a neatness and are . . composed of the latest and best to be . had for money. The Shakespeare mine near the Gold ‘Bank is of about the same class of ore and . the new management, is being equipped we with new and improved ‘machinery, which, when completed will, it is believed, cause an output equal in amount to that of the Gold Bank. There are other m'nes being worked in “that vicinity and several prospecting for the precious metal, and in all there is probably 250 men employed. eel ments.a lively a) ce erder prevails at all times. Sang or-cae! people there patronize the Marysville merchants, often sending orders by mail and otherwise for goods. There has ndt. ’ been the attention shown the people ‘in that vicinity that there should be by the merchants and the Democrat suggosts that they do 4 little courting. La Grippe. During the prevalence of the Grippe the past seasons it was a noticeable fact that those whe depended upon Dr. King’s New Discovery, not only had a speedy recovery, but escaped all of the trouble— some after effects of the malady. This remedy seems to have a peculiar power in effecting rapid cures‘not only im cases of La Grippe, but -in all Diseases of Throat, Chest and Lungs, and has cured cases of Asthma and Hay Fever of fong standing. . To be sure of having a first-class article, ask your drnggist or perfumer for Ayer’s Hair Vigor. . It is absolutely superior any other preparation of the kind. It restores the original color and fullness to hair which has become thin, faded, or gray. It keeps the scalp, cool,.moist, and free from dandruff. ‘It heals itching humors, prevents baldness, and imparts to THE HAIR a silken texture and lasting fragrance, No toilet can be considered complete withont this most popular and elegant of all hair-dressings.“My hair began turning gray and fall. ing out when I was about 25 years of age. Irving’s ‘Rip Van Winkle” is believed to have its foundation in the wonderful named Epimenides. The scene is laid in Crete, the time summer, and Epimenides a. boy of some 15 years. During the very warmest part of the day he found that some of the sheep were missing and at ‘about the same time heard. prolonged bleatings from the almost inaccessible portions of a neighboring mountain. He irection of the sounds. The path wasa very difficult one to travel over, the day hot, so'that long before he reached the tigue that he lay down in a dry place in a cool cavern to sleep. He slept, so Plitiy ’ gravely informs us, 57 years. At last when he had finally managed to shake off the terrible lethargy that had held him spellbound for more than half a century, he returned to the herd . only to find a brother younger than himself a tottering, gray haired grandfather. That ‘ill wind” proverb is very Epimenides’ enforced slumbers had endowed him with miraculous powers. He became a great epic poet and Gnostic philosopher and even defied death itself for “nearly threes ‘centuries, not dying until after he had celebrated his two cones Sat AML hirthdey.—St Thackeray's Influence Over Sala. G,. A. Some of his forecasts of what I might do if I of prophecy, and if I may borrow an image from ono of the crafts which I practiced in my youth I may say that my heart and mind were to me as he talked even of the nature of a plate of copper, and that, with the acutest of needles and and bit in on that plate a rule of work and study and cond from which . have been enabled thes¢ many years past very rarely to deviate.” . : A Dog That Stopped a Runaway. The dog, who was under the carriage, pulled the lines with his teeth and tried to stop the horse from running . could not. Then he ran to the horse’ B dog kept on in that way for two miles nutil a policeman stopped him, Ever after, so long as he lived, whenever the horse would start up suddenly, Chris would go right to the horse’s. head.— Grand 4th of July Colerain —AT— North Bloomfield Tuesday, dah Ath, 9.
