them without foundation.
Since Secretary loster came into the

they would be withdrawn, but.as that

refused to do it, Messrs.

the Treasury department while Secretary—Foster was-out of town_and tried
to bluff Assistant Secretary Crounse

there was nothing in the charges they

The affuir is ‘creating a great deal
of talk here, becausa it is the first time
that high officials of any labor organization have atiempted in such a bold

and for the same reason the outcome
is watchéd for with much interest, alany more than talk.

treated in about the same way by the
rumor mongers. He says that he has
no ilea of resigning unless requested

President has recently tokhd him that
he was entirely satisfied with his administration.of the Pension Office, and
yet nearly every one you meet believes that we will havea new Pension

The appointment of ex-Representative Owen of Indiana to be Immigration Commisioner is generally recog:

Owen is the autbor of the bill to restrict: immigration; he has made the
subject aspecial study for years, and
his appointment was asked for by hunireds of labor organizations in all sections of the country. It is the intention of the administration to strictly
enforce the immigration laws,’ and
though they are by no means perfect
it is believed they can be so adininis‘ered «a to remedy many of the worst

TME RUSSELL COMPANY,
“The Night Shift? a Great Suce
cess—Tonight’s Bill,
The Russell Dramatic Company
‘last night had a fine audience and received unstinted applause for its performance. Albert Hosmer’s’ five-act
mining play®'*Tn@ Night Shilt,”’ conStituted the bill. It is an admirably
comedy-drama = with. an
ingeniously constracted plot and is
strong melo-dramatic
situations, It is brightened here
and there with rich bits of clean
comedy, The young author sustains.
the role of the principal male character, who isan honest miner, by name
“Jack Bonford.” The hero loves
“Tdith Thorndyke” (Miss Hattie M.
Ross), whose father isthe ostensible
sole owner of the rich mine’ in which
Jack’? works, but which property
the latter is really entitled to half the
ownership of by reason of its having
been bequeathed to him by his deceased father who was a partner with
‘Thorndyke,”’ The employer seeks
torob the hero of his-heritage. ‘The
superintendent of the mine alao loves
“i lith,’” and beceming possessed of
the secret of the attempted*robbery
compels the. father, as a price for silence, tougree that he shall havé the
daughter’s hand. ~The two villains
enter into a series of conspiracies to
murdar ‘Jack,’ but each time their
plans fail. Finaily the father repents
and confesses to his daughter and
“Jack,’’? the rascally superintendent
is killed in his tracks by a friend of
Jack just as he is about to shoot the
latter in. cold blood, and all ends
tappily. The appreciation of Mr.
Hesmer’s acting, as well as-of his successas a playwright, were attested to
by his being called _betere ths curtain
at the oud of each act. He was supported by the .best company of the
several good ones that Mr. Russell
hast’ brought. here’on his. numerous
virits.
One of the very attractive features
music by three members of Prof.
Wilde’s orchestra, It added_largely
to the enjoyment of the pertormance,
as the selections were all new and
played with finish. ‘Those who have
heard the complete orchestra play say
itis ons of the best the county has
ever had. It isto be hoped that arrangenients-will s2on-be made to have
them all appear in public.
Tonighé will be enacted the thrilling
military -draina~of ““hynwood” with

A San Francisco Paper on

The News Letter of Saturday says:
cis more difficult than ever to obtain
capital for mining in California, and
any one.who ventures to approach a
capitalist*on the subject is treated
the
Innatic asylum, ‘This may seem
fact, nevertheless, When it isknown,
however, that the most. valuable gold
mines in the State are shut dewn to
accommedate a set ef howling fanatics who dub themselves farmers
nothing else will be much of a surprise, More money could be taken
ou? in a-vyear from the hydraulic
mines laying idle than it would take
to purchase the fee simple of every
ranch owned by the “dog in the
manger element on their assessed
valuation, The legislation against
the owners of these valuable properties was one of the most
iquitous outrages ever perpetrated,
aad° if any uiited and determined
stand had béeh made against the unjust law, it would have been wiped
out of existence long ago. ‘The State
has been losing ground ever since these
mines were elosed down, and there
never will be any genuine prosperity
until the ban against them is removed.
It speaks volumes for the peaceful
nd law abiding disposition of the
residents of the counties most affected
by this arbitrary exhibition of class
legislation that the’individuals who act
as spies_on the mining populatien are
permitted to pursue their contemptible
occupation, which’ would lead to reprisals in any other part of tlie world,
The conduct of these people, robbed
bring iaffience to bear in their favor,
tending to-restore their former-prosperity, when the gold imines of California were the tall of the world.
