BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. MONDAY EWNG JUNE 27,992. . the cash value. The fixtures of the magnificent Chronicle THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. VERY CHEEKY. How the San Franciscans Get Out of Paying Taxes. : It is notorious that the property holders of San Franciscoalways manage to squirm out of paying their share of taxes, in fact they do not pay within 40 per cent of If they were assessed in the same proportion that county property one-half that which is now required to carry on the State government. If County Assessor Bond had San Franeisco as a guide, Nevada county would be assessed for about $2,500,000 instead of . come to light when the Board of Equalization méet in San Francisco. Dunn, expert of the Grand Jury, has filed a communication with the local Board of Equalization calling oT on the persunal property of M. H. Young by Assessor Suwebe. Young’s total assessment. is. $17,900, as fellows : Power presses, $12,000; solvent credits, $1,500; fixtares, $750; furniture, $1,000; jewelry, $1,000; paintings, $400; four horses, $500; vehicles, $500; piano, Mr. Dunn compares this with the assesement levied on the personal estate of many other prominent citizens and concludes by suggesting that Mr. De Young be raised to $71,500. The furniture item he wants raised to $10,000 and the presses to $50,000. This is a very bad showing for Mr. De like the Chronicle. In the first place his presses coat not less than $100,000, and his solvent debts are placed at less than those of a corner grocery store, when in fact they would reach into the thousands. building are placed at $750. The clock alone in the’ building cost $2,500, and the balance of the fixtures in the building not less than $10,000. His jewelry is assessed for $1,000. This includes silverware at his privdte residence, and judging from what has been said when he has given private parties, $10,000 would bea ylow value on his jewelry and silverware. Paintings $400. It is said that Mr. De Young has as fine a selection of paintings as any house in San Francisco. If that be 20 then he should have been assessed many thousands of dvllars for them. Four horses, $500, being the price for erdinary mustangs. Vehicles, $500. Now it is notorious that De Young's horses and vehicles are second to none in San Francisco, and must have cost not less than $7,000 or $8,000, and yet the whole outfit is assessed for $1,000. His piano is assessed at $250, when the fact is De ‘Young would not have an instrument of that value im his kitchen. His piano never cost less than $1,500, and perbaps more. The expert thinks Mr. De Young’s assessment should be raised to $71,500, when in reality, if it was assessed at the}: same ratie as Bond has assessed Nevada county, it should be raised to $150,000. "We are disposed to be charitable, and attribute the fault of Mr. De Young’s bad assessment to the County Assessor, who perhaps placed his own assessinent on the property in consideration of Mr. De Young being largely instrumental in electing him to office. The intention of the Assessor's reciprocity, if such it were, Miss Bessie W. Harris, daughter of a musk dealer in Troy. N.
