Perhaps its many schemes for investment do not form its most remarkabla feature. How many persons that have suddenly risen from poverty to affluence, the world will never know. As a consolation for this ignorance a society has recently been formed at that city offering to all citizens of California (from pure love of home, as the rest of the world is excluded from the privileges) an opportunity to share in these wonderful accumulations of fertune. Unfortumasely lack of time and Space prevents giving all of the dazzling propositions of this society, but here are. a few: The capital stock of the society is $50,000,000, made up of 500,000 shares ef the par value of $100 each. You subscribe for stock and pay for-it-in installments. For instance, for one share you pay 60 cents a month for 84 months, Your stock is then paid fp and you are entitled to draw the par Valuein cash. You have paid 60 cents & month for seven years, in all $50.40. You then receive $100, a prefit of $49.60. Will the Gitizens Bank and other monied institutions continue to buy bonds ‘that will yield but six pec cent, simple interest? The danger in giving this valuable information tu the public is that monied men may be influenced to draw their coin, frow circulation and invest their ail in that society ef San Francisco. Bat the socieiy doea not confine its It will lean to its members money on the most favorable terms. ‘A loan of $2000 would cost (in sevthe society in mouthly installmenis, ithas cost less than five per cent.’’ l such advantageous prepositions could hardly be ungrateful enough te ask how it can afford-to lean money 50 cheaply and pay such great prolitsto the investor, oe . Perhaps some may be curious to’ know how the investment of the im. mense sum of $50,000,000 ia secured. The society has not failed to consider this matter. The Aaylo-California Bank is its treasurer. Reminiscences. At Grass Valley night before last Protection Hese Co. gave a reception tothe members of Kagle and Reliance Hose companies. There was a banquet, Assemblyman Hocking was toust-master, and in his address of welcome te the guests he gave a graphic sketch of the early history of the tewn’s Fire Department. The first fire company, an impe-fect organization, wae fermed after the great fire of 1853, when over 500 buildings were destroyed at a less of $550,000. The first perfect fire erganization was organized June 7, 1858, with 41 members. It was known as the “Grass Valley Fire, Hoek and Ladder Company.’”’ A.B. Dibble presented the company with a frame building of one and one-half stories for an engine and meeting heuse, and it was moved on about the siie now occupied by Protection Co. This building was deslroyed by the great fi-e of June ll, 1862, which caused a total less of $25,000.——-Subsequently (in 1863) — the present substantial bsick engine house was built by the town. Mr, Dibble was made an honorary life mamber ef the company for the gi.t of the frame building. About 1860, the Union Hoek and Ladder Company was formed and took possession of the Grass Valley paay’s hook and ladder outfit, latter compiny continuing its with the company’s money, some.
