No disorders excepting the most deadly forms of lung disease, involve sucha tremendous destruction of -organic tissue as those which fasten upon the kidneys. Such maladies, when they become chronic—and none are so liable to assume that phase—com pletely wreck the system. To prevent this terrible disease, recourse should -be , had, upon the first manifestatiou of trouble, to Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, which experience has proved to be highly effective as a means of imparting tohe and regularity to the or4%ans of urination, as well as to the liver, stomach and bowels. Another beneficial result of this medicine, naturally écnsequent upon its diuretic action, is the elimination from the blood of impurities which beget rheumatism, neuralgia, gout, dropsy and other maladies.“ By increasing the activity of the kidneys.it augments the depurative efficiency of these organs, which are most important cutlets for the escape of such impurities. The other evening after supper the Old Man took down from a little shelf ‘there is at the foot of his trunk an old cigar box, and sitting down on the little porch in front of the old cabin bezan to unfold a number of newspaper clippings ard to run them over with his eyes. I asked binmy what he had there. “Oh,” said he, ‘this is a lot of political letters published in the TRaNsthe Herald, I have been keeping them until I saw the writers were done, so I could sum them all up at The-writers agree-inafew things: First, that the Republicans are in the majority in Nevada county; second, that for’ some reason or other the Democratic minority contrive to hold fully half thé cennty offices. But there seems to be a wide difference of opinion why this is so, only the old phrase is repeated—want of harmony. Now I don’t care a snap for all that has been suid. on this sabject, only one sentence in one of these letters attracts my attention and seems to meto furnish some key to the mystery. One writersays: ‘Methodsare considered. perfectly legitimate in politicsthat would be exrecable in any other business.’ Is this true? Is it a fact that it isno disgrace to do the most dirty and contemptible tricks in order to secure a party nomination? That if one only wins that is a bar to allinqniries as to how he won? Ii this is true, the end of the great Republic cannot be far laway. No nation has long survived the whole people, Webster said, ‘The loss of a firm, national characte and the degredation of a ‘nation’t honor is the inevitable prelude w her destruction.’ But the truth is, the writer that penned that sentence } have quoted has not looked beyond thx smoky atmosphere of some saloon caucus, Perhaps he has judged the masses by himeelf,May be he always votes a straight ticket and woulu not consider it Wrong to employ ‘exrecrable methods’ in carrying a p litical convention. The people of California in spite of all that has been sais abouttheir political carelesaness, t call it by no worse name, are ver) apt to inquire somewhat into th: methods used by successful candidates, and it has hapened a good many times that a nomination secured by ‘ways that are dark ana tricks that are vain’ has insuréd efeat. Never was man mniore certain of ,an election than was Hon. eorge C, Gorham when he war nominated for Governor, and neve: was a man more. disgracefulls defeated. Right or wrong, the peopl believed that -he.had won the nomination by smart political thimble-rigging, and they buiied him so deep under their indignation hat he bar never scratched out to this day. 1 could name several instances of the same kind, Some say that this scratching and bolting is confined ‘to the Republicans, but this is not so. Sonoma county bas always been a reliable Democratic county for President but one half the county offices have peen filled by Republicans for the past f° years. Plumas, Sierra and Nevaa are strong Republican counties, but in neither has a clean Republic«n ticket been elected for so long that the time has passed out of memory. The fact-is that every communily is more or less cursed (usually more) by a small coterie of men who imagine that they arethe whole party; that the rest of the pecple ought not to ask questions avout party affairs or party nominations, but vote the straight ticket, no matter if ‘execrable methods’ were used to nominate that tivk‘et, These men have stndied the management of conventions, know whom to flaiter, whom to threaten, and just when a little ‘money will do the most good. But: the delegates go away with the idea creeping into their heads that somehow or other they have done—not the best, but the worst, and from’ them the contagion spreads until when election day comes a large number of the reading, thinkJing men in the ranks scratch their tickets in wrath and indignation. “How the nation did A, get on the ticket?’ asks geome farmers ofa returned delegate. ‘Well,’ says the delegate, 'ecratching his bumps, ‘blamed if 1 just know how. it did happen. You see the business got kinder snarled up and sorter lost run of things; b some of the old trands said there would political ‘trickster may win before the people, but he is never safe to bet on. There isa spirit of independence in thought and action abroad, Old doctrines are thought no more of because they smell of the past. Traditions have but feeble holden men, It is an once and see what they amounted to. f Fe : pideedl J , Jution, and the people are claiming) — . honest methods in every walk of life.” : Squip.
