WHO WAS IT ?
Ap Unknown “Corpse” Sent Hore From San
Francisco.
James Northway of the Union Hotel
bar received by express from San Francisco Saturday.evening a coffin containing what purported to be acorpse. Northway was greatly surprised at the arrival
of such a package, and with the assistance of two or three other gentlemen removed it to the club room in the rear of
the billiard parlor, wherd,-in almost
breathless silence, the lid of the -coffin
was carefully removed. With—bianched
cheeks and sad eyes Northway gazod upon the corpse te see if he could identify it.
His sorrowful looks quickly gave place
to an expression of merriment. The
corpse was no corpseat all, but adummy
rigged up for the purpose. Northway
and his assistants indulged in a_ hearty
laugh over the sell nd all hands had a
drink at his expense. They then. set
about to sell others. The report was
quietly started tnat a stranger Lad died
suddenly at the Union Hotel, and that
noone. could identify him, Inside of
three hours every available man in town,
including numerdus prominent citizens,
had visited the ‘‘morgue” to see if they
knew who the ‘‘stiff’ was. As the visitors entered the room they removed
their hats aud peered into the coffin expecting to see a real dead man. The
change of countenance was what tokled
the bystanders who were ‘‘in the know,
and as seon as a person was sold he would
rush out in search of another victim.
Yesterday some of the wags went so
far as to carry the coffia and its dummy
occiipant about from one saloon to another, getting drinks on it.
Northway has not yet found eut who
sent him the bex, but he has strong suspicions.
