James Northway of the Union Hotel bar received by express from San Francisco Saturday.evening a coffin containing what purported to be acorpse. Northway was greatly surprised at the arrival of such a package, and with the assistance of two or three other gentlemen removed it to the club room in the rear of the billiard parlor, wherd,-in almost breathless silence, the lid of the -coffin was carefully removed. With—bianched cheeks and sad eyes Northway gazod upon the corpse te see if he could identify it. His sorrowful looks quickly gave place to an expression of merriment. The corpse was no corpseat all, but adummy rigged up for the purpose. Northway and his assistants indulged in a_ hearty laugh over the sell nd all hands had a drink at his expense. They then. set about to sell others. The report was quietly started tnat a stranger Lad died suddenly at the Union Hotel, and that noone. could identify him, Inside of three hours every available man in town, including numerdus prominent citizens, had visited the ‘‘morgue” to see if they knew who the ‘‘stiff’ was. As the visitors entered the room they removed their hats aud peered into the coffin expecting to see a real dead man. The change of countenance was what tokled the bystanders who were ‘‘in the know, and as seon as a person was sold he would rush out in search of another victim. Yesterday some of the wags went so far as to carry the coffia and its dummy occiipant about from one saloon to another, getting drinks on it. Northway has not yet found eut who sent him the bex, but he has strong suspicions. DEATH OF NEWTON BOOTH. The Ex-Governor of California . Succumbs to a Cancer on fis Tongue. A dispatch has been received stating that ex-Governor Booth died at his home in Sacramento lastnight. His disease was cancer ef the tongue. Walsh Removed From the County Jail on Account of Sickness, Under Sheriff Schmidt and District Attorney Nilon returned from Moore’s Flat yesterday. The particulars regarding the cutting affray which happened there a few days ago are about the same as have been published already. Fitzgerald is in a precarious: condition, and it is thought his wound will prove fatal. Walsh, the man who came to this city and gave himself up and was lodged in the county jail, is suffering trom erysipelas in the fave and head as a result of" the injuries he received during the melee. He has been removed from the jail to the City Hotel on Broad street. ATHLETIC CLUB AT GRASS VALLEY. A Meeting Held and Business of Import. ; ance Transacted. The Grass Valley Athletic Club met Friday evening, March 18th, with President Kidder in the chair. By-Laws reportedand the report was amended in a few particulars and adopted. Fred Dawson, Chairman of the Furnishing Committee, have reported having secured article as follows: Six pairs of rosewood clubs ; one pair of 5-pound rosewood clubs ; one punch bag: two pairs fencing feils. one pair straignt sticks ; two pairs plastrons; one chest weight ; set of 6-ounce boxing gloves; one rowing machine. 3 The matter of securing an instructor has not yet been decided upon. A cemmittee comprising Dr. C: W. Jones, J. F. Robinson and ©. F. Lobecker was appointed to confer with the Jockey Club relative to the field meeting. Swain Merced Sun: K. Casper, a merchant of Nevada City, is in Merced. He came*here a few days ago, to interview Mr. Swain, superintendent of the Merced Electric works, regarding an electric plant. Mr. Casper has been a resident and business man of Nevada City for over thirty years and is desirous of putting in a first-class electric plant to supply light for the town. Mr. Swain is acknowledgéd to be one of the best electrical machinists on the coast and if was for that reason Mr. Casper consulted him, after interviewing many leading electricians of California. The result of his visit was the purchase ofa tive hundred T6-caudle power dynamo manufactured by the Heisler Electric Co., which Mr. Swain recommended to be the ade.
