to bee Felton and have a settlement con-.
@erning the Senatorship. De Young’s

HORSES FOR FIRES.
SELECTING AND TRAINING ANIMALS
Considerable Pati and a Period of
About a Month Is Needed for Raw Recruits—The Horse Piays an Important
Part at Every Fire in a Big City.
Of the praise which has been showered
upon the New York fire department for
the excellence of its system, the splendid
animals that haul the heavy engines and
ul
eagerness to get to the fire.
* AN IMPORTANT ANIMAL.
It is plain that the horse plays just as
aecessary a part in the autonomy of the
fire department as a human member
The more intelligent the horse is the
juicker the engine or truck which he is
ielping to haul will be‘at the scene of a
ire. Horses that enter into the spirit of
he work as heartily as the firemen are al10st invaluable, for every moment savec
‘requently counts for much in saving
ife and property. It follows that the
raining of the horses which are added
very year to the department is as im
ortant as the training of the firemen.
vho’ must learn to handle the hose, ax
nd sealing ladder with expertness. Alough that branch of the service is
xeard of seldom by the general public.
thief Bonner gives it the strictest attenion, and the recruits in horseflesh have
99 go through an ordeal just as severe as
-hat which their human allies must undergo.
The training stables in West Ninetyninth street are in a quiet neighborhood
and the new building is used also as the
department’s horse hospital. Foreman
Joseph Shea, who is also Dr. Shea, has
charge of the stables. He was graduated as a veterinary surgeon and has
most important in the department. He
looks after all the sick horses in the
engine houses, and is‘kept busy at the
hospital with the horses laid up there.
He buys the green horses for the department, accepting them only after they
have shown their ability to do the work
ator Felten says, however, that there was
mo agreement with De Young or his friends
to this effect. Senater Felton does not
gyet announce whether he will be a candidate at the coming election or not.
