2 t he Dain Transcript. . Ce eee eae MONDAY. MAROH 30, 1891. PEOPLE WH? &NOW IT ALL. They Advise the Editar and Tet Him flow to Run His Paper. There are.some people, says ths Btockton Republican, who know se much that it takes ail their time to go about and tell other folks how to con: duct theirown busine s. They are so { bardened with knowledge that it just : naturally exudes out of them, and} } erudition may be distilled from their old hats, philosophy from their old boots, and sagacity from tueir dilaprdated old clothes. Itis their self-ap2 pointed task that they shall advise and give counsel to every other man, and ‘especially to the newspaper man.Itis a wonderful and to be regretted fact that there never lived a newspaf per man who would not be advised by : these people with ponderous thoughts. The prince and the pau, er, the priest and-the layman, the good and the unholy, the rough and the polished gentleman of fashion, the f.rmer and the mechanic, the lawyer and the mera chant, the “‘butcher and, baker and candie-stick maker’’—they all have a word tosay tothe editor. Just a little suggestion, perhaps, but as welcome and valuable to the man who rules the sanctum asa buil in achina shop, as inspiring asa call from th collector, a8 sweet asa pickle put up ina hermetically sealed tear-jug by Pharoah. One man says the paper is too sengational; another, that it is too dull; another, that itis too humorous; another that it istoo dry; another, that it is not newsy; anvther;-that~it—bas ‘mething in it; augther that it favors the wrong party; another, that. it pur“sues the wrong policy; another; that Gt fe-not sufficiently religious ; another, that it is too religious; another, that it comes out too strongly on ove subject and not strong enough of another. And the poor, ‘helpless editor, who thought he knew alittle bit about the business, and who must conduct a paper in a way to please all the philosophic sages and savants who come to shim and tell him how to do it, has hi hands -fuil-of troubie; his head -fullof muddle, bis heart full of pain and his ea pocketa and desks full of b lls which eae he cannot collect. It in-too bad. Why is it that those people who know all about how a paper should be conducted do not go into the business themselves? Why~do t they not quit advising, and counseling, Fat, and warning the editor, and give the , / public the benefit of their knowledge? ‘ What brilliant editorials they would UPS produce! Such a'long array of start4 ling. facts! Such ap sbundance. of sparkling, coatbursting, — original jokes! such a stupendous fund of loiy cal news! Such pathetic descriptions i of sad, ead scenes! ate eS nn The Prestrating Shecke “Of tyalariat fever-are-not to be.counteracted by quinine with any degree of certainty, or for any length of time. ; The eradication and prevention of diseases of a miasmatic typé are, . however, ascertained possibilities. _ Long experiétie® lias Strowy thre is infinitely more preventive efficacy in the fine botanic medicine, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, than in thealkaloids, drugs and poisons which were formerly the only recoznized means of removing and anticipating attacks of fever and ague and bilious remittent.
