the formula, which funding purely vezetable
gems and precious stones, and ‘how, extolling the Word of God Retr most
precious gem of all, they left good
book with many a great lord and lady
who had hardly heard of it before.
The Calabrian colony was ‘destroyed
by the Inquisition, but the Piedmontese
valleys survived the petsecutions—the
thirty-three terrible persecutions to
which they were subjected—antil they
were finally liberated less than half a
century ago.
You have heard, too, of the fearful
Waldensian massacre, after which only
1,000 out of 14,000 prisoners escaped to
the mountains, and of the ‘glorious recarn of our fathers” to their valleys in
1689. That event, the most celebrated
in our history, was commemorated by
anniversary.
Today, on three valleys nestling to
gether on the Italian side of the Alp
very near to Turin, the capital of the old
Piedmont, there are 30,000 Waldenses,
descendants of the early champions of
the faith.
Napoleon the Great, when he was
ing gratitude by granting us land and
privileges beyond any we had before enjoyed. He then declared that-the retarn
xf our fathers was the most wonderful
feat in militiry history, and Napoleon,
with all his faults, was an expert in milhe. gave his people .a new constitntion—
aow the constitution of Italy—in 1848
»mancipationto the Waldenses, and it
ended and our new era of happiness and
prosperity began.
We have now, in our chief settlement,
4 theological school and «a high school
for young ladies, and Waldensianschools
we have everywhere. Traveling through
our valleys you will at once guess you
are in a Christian country. You will see
children going to Sunday school with
their New e: e hel u
fete devoted to ovr pure and
worship.
We don’t leave our valleya, When
2,000 or 3,000 Waldenses went away
wross the seas to found a colony in Urusuay people predicted the depopulation
f our native land; but there is no danser_of that.. Our mountains are not
alastic. They will not hold more than
lasting walls. Some of the Waldenses,
therefore, are compelled from time to
time to emigrate.
But, though separated from us by
thousands of miles of earth and ocean,
the colonists in Uruguay form one of
the seventeen parishes of the church of
the valleys, and send a deputy every
September to our synod. js
Outside of our own territory we havc
