+ . man who kicks, merely for pure love of ~ Unless the teeeh are pureand white, -"Books om Blood and Skin Diseases Free, came x Ee. ~ ss 3 " sna onc nate att aR po . eee ote, Ok fled A oe oe THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. FRIDAY EVWNG, LET US UNITE IN e Prayer For the Fellow Who Can't Help Kicking at “Suthi.” A few days ago the reporter of the ‘Tnansontrr had his attention called te “kickers,” and if there is anything that “he likes, one thing above another, it is a “kicker.” It is customary to use rathera contemptuous tone when speaking of “kickers,” but this is wreng. A judicieus kicker is a public benefactor. The MARCH 4, ’92. kicking, is, probably, deserving of contempt. He usually does not knew what he is kicking at. It is an aimless and unconsidered proceeding. He kicks ina careless and unpremeditated way, without any apparent justification tor the act, just as a dog bays the moon. There is no method about it, and he is very properly cotisidered a crank—a bilious, or perhaps, dyspeptic crank, but a crank. But the kicker who knows what he is abent and has a reason for the kick that is in him is a very different sort of customer. He knows why he iskicking. There is something tangible at which his kick is directed, and it not infrequently happens “that immediately subsequent to the delivery of the kick there is heard a sound like spat, which shows that the kick landed somewhere on the target if not on the bullseye itself. This is the style of kicking that commands the respect and admiration of the beholders and is a benefit to the community.Out of the thousands who read this article there is probably, barring cranks, not one who, within, say the past thirty days, has not wished that semething could be done or said about something he she or ‘nas noticed, which was not as it should be, and to which attention should be called. There is where the kick comes in, or should come in. A little reflection will convince you that there is some merit in kicking. Honor the kicker; do not condemn him, at least until you find out whether or not he is justified in his kicking. In other words, don’t you kick befere you know what youare kicking at or whether or net there is anything to kick at,'isthe opinion of the Transcript but of the Marysville Appeal. Rolliof Honor. If thirteen young men—lawyers anc physicians—who have jnst organized « Thirteen club in this city, can fitid x haunted house to meet in they will be most happy. The organization is nearly complete, the bylaws and rule have been drawn up and adopted, aitd the only thing lacking is the haunted house. [If this cannot be found it is proposed to ase the dead house owned by the town. Among the rules are almost everything superstitious people avoid. The president is to sit under an open umbrella during all meetings and at the quarterly divers. A ladder will be raised in the. roam, and every member entering wili pass under it. A crosseyed janitor wil; be secured, and one of the members whose hair is fiery red will be obliged to enter the neeting room first every time it is opened. A skeleton will be seated opposite the president at every feast. and two black cats will be purchased and kept in the clubroom. Each member takes a solemn obligation to look-at the new moon over his left shoulder, pass on each side of a post when two are walking together. walk between any couples who may be seen talking together on the street. and do everything contrary to the aceepted custom. The meetings will be held on Friday evenings, and if any member has to inake a journey he will start on Friday or the 13th of the month.—New Haven Cor. New York Sun. Curfous Tomb of a Kentuckian. Several weeks ago Mr. James Golden. a well known. lumber. dealer of.Hickman, Ky., died there and was buried with a strict conformity with .the provisions of a remarkable will. He had while in health a strong fear of being buried alive, fostered probably by reading accounts of the few cases of this ‘sind. that are known to have occurred. ind he determined to take no chances in that line that could possibly be avoided. He caused a tomb to be erected, and in that tomb had an opening left on the 2ast side large enough for a man to pass hrough. This was covered with glass In his will he stipulated that a strong 1ammer should be placed ‘in the casket with him, and that the lid of the coffin should not be screwed down, so that if »y chance he should be consigned to the night, if he gained power to move, push 4¥ the lid and with the hamnner break mat the glass in the opening left for. the surpose and thus escape a lingering iorrible death. His instructions were xithfully obeyed. Friends took it upon hemselves to watch the tonmib and he 1ear in case the gentieman’s fears should ‘rove well founded and render him as istance. But death came with an an . -rring shot, and he still slumbers peace ully in his casket.—Columbus (Ky.) forum. Two Queer Names. When.a petition for a new postoffice in che mountains of Virginia was received ome weeks ago it was found that the 1ame submitted was undesirable. The petitioners were so notified and requested to submit a list of names in order of preference. The new list contained no names acceptable, and the assistant postmaster general directed an under official to select a namne himself. The clerk immediately walked to the map and, locating the office, discovered that there was a mountain hard by named Purgatory, and the new postoffice was given the name of Purgatory. When the establishing papers were forwarded to the petitioners, and they were requested to submit a name for postmaster, they returned the name of George Godbethere. So that the new postoffice of Purgatory is presided over by George Godbethere.—Baltimore American. The Mud of Egypt. Egypt, says Herodotus, is a gift of the Nile. A trueror more pregnant word was never spoken. Of course it is just equally true, in a way, that Bengal is a gift of the Ganges, and that Louisiana and Arkansas 3re a gift of the Mississippi, but with this difference, that in the case of the Nile the dependence is far more obvious, far freer from disturbing or distracting details. For that reason, and also because the Nile is so much more familiar to most English speaking folk “than the American rivers, 1 choose Egypt as my type of a regular mudland. But in order to understand it fully you mustn’t stop all your time in Cairo and the Delta; you mustn’t view it only from . che terrace of Shepheard’s hotel or the cocky platform of the Great Pyramid at Gizeh; you must push up country early ip country that Egypt unrolls itself visof making.. It is there that the full im»ortance of good, rich, black mud first orces itself upon you by undeniable eviYence.—Cornhill Magazine. . Wheat Does Not Grow Wld. ‘Fhe existence of names for wheat iu the most ancient languages confirms the avidence of its great antiquity and of its cultivation in the more temperate parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. From the avidence adduced by botanists of high standing, it seems highly improbable that wheat has never been found growing persistently in a wild state, although it has often been asserted by poets, travslers and historians. In thé Odyssey, for example, we are told that wheat formerly grew in Sicily without the aid of man. Diodorus repeats the tradition that Osiris found wheat and-barley growing promiscuously in Palestine, but neither this nor other reputed discoveries of -whieat growing wild seem at all credible, seeing that it does not appear to be endowed with the power of persistency, except under continued culture.—St. Louis Republic. —} Ae Dickens as an Art Critic. Pa The son of a neighbor of Dickens, then a@ very young artist—indeed, quite a boy —had painted his first picture, the subject being an aged knight in full armor, apparently having recently returned: from the wars, and overcome with fatigue. Finding himself unable to reach his ancestral castle, he sinks exhausted on a fallen tree in a sort of orchard; an¢ some cottage children bring him some fruit to recruit his exhausted strength. Dickens took great interest in the young artist—who, by the way, is now very eminent—and greatly admired his picture, especially the figure of the old knight; but, “My dear fellow,” he said, ~}those apples won’t be of any use—that old gentleman requires burned brandy to bring him round!”—Temple Bar.
