CITY CROSS-WALKS,
A Move Should Be Got on Immediately in
That Direction.
Asa prominent gentleman said to the
Transcript reporter today, and his
words cannot be gainsayed, ‘‘ the cresswalks of Nevada City are ina more dilapidated condition than they have been
since the town was founded. There is
not one crossing in a passable condition.
Fast Sunday,” he said, ‘‘although a
church member, I ceuld:not refrain taking God’s name in vain when I stubbed
my toes on three of the. different crosswalks in going to the house of prayer.
These cross-walks area burning disgrace
to the city and I earnestly hope, for the
good name of the town, that decent:

town intends to adorn his place, and
it is essential that Kuights of Pythias

RIVER MINING.
Meeting of the Directors of the Yuba River
Mining Company.
Tidings:—Thos. C. Bourne, James
Vineyard, J. P. Pollard, 8S. J. Alderman
and D. E, Matteson, the Directors ‘of
the Yuba River Mining Company, held
a meeting in this city Monday afternoon.:
The company is now engaged in getting
out poles and building a road to the
mine, which is situated on the Yuba
river about three and a half miles west
of the Bourne ranch on what is known
as Boston Bar.
This Bar was very rich in early days,
and there are good prospects that it 1s
still rich, One of the company whe
worked there years ago said the other
day that his company left gravel there
that paid $2.50 to the pan en account of
the large amount of water which they
had no means of handling.

It is said that the two gentlemen who
are working the arrangement have made

of the electric railroad, which it was
said-wculd be built from Nevada City
through Grass Valley to Merysville.
They seem to forget that plans and ar.
rangements for such a large undertaking
cannot be consummated in a few days
time, and sometimes not in many weeks.
No enterprise of such magnitude was
ever ‘inaugurated without there being

be removed and even the minutest detail
properly attended to before any decisive
steps can be taken. It is so in the case
of the building of the proposed electric

THANK GOD.
Like——the--Deceased—Othello, the Croaker's
Occupation Is Busted.
It is no small degree of satisfaction to
that class of our fellow citizens wh. have
stuck by Nevada City during all its dark
days, in the firm belief that the mines in
the district would bring great prosperity
at some time, that they have lived to see
-that—day;—and that the croakers who
through all the days of adversity were
bewailing the collapse of the town, are
now with the faith-believing citizens.
Those public-spirited citizens are also
pleased at the thought that’ next. week,
on the occasion of the visit of the hun-+}dreds of Knights of Pythias, representing
almost every town in California, that we
will be bereft-of thu—oroaker’s voice in
giving the town and county a black eye.
Being now all of one happy .family, the
of all mining sections in the world Nevada City is the most promising of all.
It’s rich quartz and gravel mines plainly
tell the story without any chin music
from any one.
Under---this state of affairs nothing
couid have eccurred that would so conapicuously spread the news broadcag\}
throughout the State than the assembling
here of the Grand Lodge of Knights of
Pythias. When they go to their respective homes they will net cease talking
of the great hospitality of our people,
our beautiful town, beautiful ladies, and
our immensely rich mines, and the section will be better advertised than ever
before,
