When the advantages of this county are fully . . mene SUNDAY, SEPT. 12, 1836. _ NEVADA COUNTY. No mining county in the State ulation than bas our own; in fact jt is and has been increasing at a The mining counties, if we may except one or two, show the decrease in population to some extent, while the agricultural counties are filling up very rapidly. The prospects of our county are “brighter than they have ever been and there is no reason why it should not sustain double its present population. The mining prospects of the county to-day were never better, and there are other resources which are attracting the people abroad this way which ous. There are large districts of rich soil, where are as fine farms as can be found in the Stute which can be purchased at a small prive. The hill lands of the Eastern States do not begin to be as rich as this soil, and yet they are culis much moré severe. On these lands good grazing is found, and almost any of the products of the temperate zone may be profitably cultivated. The vine thrives and our Bartlett pears and other fruit+ are unequalled in the world. There is no reason why the landr of Nevada County should not be as. valuable =i agriculture and grazing . pt os asany in the State, and especially for crops which require irrigation, the advantages are fat greater. The system of ditches extending throughout the county supply an abun dance of water for this purpose, which may be easily conveyed to “any desired point. The timber lands which have been cleared will produce excellent crops, and the advantages of thase lands for agricultural purposes are demonstrated by the experience of those who have engaged in the cultivation of the soil. The land here jis cheaper than in ny. other part of a for of the Nevada Association. Now that lands in the southern part of the State have reached such exorbitant prices hundreds of people are coming to this section where they can . obtain just as good lands for a tenth of the price.charged down there. The prospects of Nevada county, t lore, are not, wholly dependent upon the mines, alyears or more tocome. Th; time will surely come when the products of the soil in this section will from any other business. . There isalways money to be made in farming when conducted upon business principles. A good living and independence are joys of the cultivation of the soil unknown known hundreds of families will come here and settle among us. We have heretofore labored under . . the disadvantage of not having] } our section known to the hundreds . of people who are now seeking} . homes in California,. but they ‘are gradually finding out that we have good and cheap lands where they can commence farming ong small. j er capital than anywhere elge. The “Bartlett Pear Belt’? pamphiét is proving an effective in-. } strument in directing the newcomers here. In an English magazine an attempt is made to give a series of “ Americanisms”; that is to say, coined or invented in America. Under the word ‘‘bonanz«’”’ this definition is given—‘‘spanish; a Hbig scheme by which, honestly or otherwise, much money is made.” Upon this a critic pounces, and says that bonanza means good fortune or good luck.’’? Bonanza ie, indeed, a Spanish word, and very naturally came into use in California or Nevada. But it does not mean ‘‘a big scheme”’ or “ luck.” It is a nautical—a sea-going word, and means fair weather atsea. Ifthe reader will refer to St. Matthew viii, 26, he will read that after the Lord rebuked the wind and the sea “there was a great calm.’”’ And if reference is next had to the Spanish version of the New Testament he will find the phrase there given. “‘ una grande bonanza.” It is easy to understand how the word came into its figurative use—as meaning a weary cearch. ‘Aver’s Agu on the liver a and drives-¢ Cream Ba f ble entirely disappeared.—J. beth, N.
