The Sutter Farmer says George Ohleyer has returned from Washington, where he went as a representative of the securing appropriations for the improvement of the Sacramento river and its tributaries. He thinks favorable action will be taken by Congress on these appropriations, as they are not excessive. “With reference to the mining bill,” says the Farmer, “‘the gentlenian is not so sanguine. The question involved in this kind of legislation being entirely new and without precedent, Mr. Ohleyer thinks Congress will move slowly in the matter: It is evident that if this kind of legislation is pressed it will result in a more thorough investigation of the debris question than has ever yet . been had, with a result we apprehend entirely different from what is expected by the men whe are laboring to have hydraulic mining rehabilitated.” Tur female department of the State asylum at Stockton was lighted for the first time on Friday evening last by natural gas. ‘The State owns the well and it furnishes any amount ef a clear and strong illuminating pewer.
