The participants met at the resideice of. Miss Maud Nickerson and ma.ched, notwithstanding the bad roads, to the schoolhouse, where they were joincd by about twenty others. From thence they proceeded to the home oi Miss Butterfield, taking the young lady completely by. surprise. The surprisers were cordially received, and games, music and daucing indulged in till a late hour, when refreshinents were served, the party breaking up shortly afterward. A number of candidates for the Red Cross degreé were then introduced and the degree was conferred with all honors, : Then followed a sumptuous banquet, which ig invariably a feature of the con: ferring of this degree. Gustaro Goldsmith, a brother of Ed, Goldsinith, formerly of this city, died in San Francisco last week. They did not go, however, Death of Mrs. Sarah Helmes. Mrs. Sarah Holmes, mother of Mrs. C. W. Beedle, died in this city Sunday morning. Her age was ‘nearly 82 years, The funeral took place this afternoon from the Congregational Church. Mrs, Holmes was a very old resident of this city, and was a lady very highly esteemed by all who knew her, Lots of Goin Around.
