C. F. Ayer, of Smartsville, who was in
this city yesterday, informed a representative of the Marysville Democrat that
himself and associates, who have bought
several tracts of land in the foothills of
this county during the past six mouths,
have completed their purchases for the
present. He says they have several
tracts to rent o persons who will cult,
vate and improve the land, and will ‘probably be able to make arrangements to
furnish water to irrigate sume of the
"places. Mr. Ayer has confidence in the
future of these foothills land, and believes
the investment will prove to be good for
the-people-of.the county, as well as the
capitalist whe have invested their money
in them.

Mr. Geo. H. Sherman, late of Sells’ Bro’s

with Barnum and two seasons with the
Sells’ Bros’. and received $250 per week
for doing trapeze and acrobatic feats. He

Everything Encouraging.
Say what. you will, the money market
in Nevada City is in a better condition
than it has been in many years past.
There-is no reason why such sheuld noi
be the case. There is a large and steady
output of bullion frem our mines, and
more men employed than there has been
in years. The men who financially ran
away behind, ‘when the mines were
closed down, are now catching up ane
paying their old bills, as all honest
miners always do. Times ahead are
still brighter for goed old Nevada City.
The Constitution.
The old Constitution quartz mine, on
the other side of Deer creck from the
Federal Loan, is now being worked, A
short time ago the owners ran a tunnel a
distance of 120 feet and struck a fine
looking body of quartz, The ledge is
now about two feet wide and prospects
well, Arrangements will soen be made
to work it in a systematic manner. This
mine was formerly owned by the late
Oscar Maltman and a man named Mey
ers. Mr. Meyers still retains his in
terest, and is opening up the mine.
The Conference Committee.
The Editerial Conference Committee,
consisting of J. M. Walling, W. D.
Long, N. P. Brown, F, E. Wadsworth,
E. M. ‘Preston, M. L. Marsh, E, J.
Rector and F, 't. Nilon, will go to Gras:
Valley on Wednesday evening and confer with a similar committee at thai
place as to arrangements for the recep
tion ef the men of brains who are to visi:
the two towns the last of this month.

—-——— + 2 oe -—The Chamption,
This grand old mine is looking ita best
at the present time, and is a regular dividend payer, the last few being thirty
cents per share, ‘The fine rock they are
now taking out comes from the third to
the ninth level, and preparations are
being made to open still another level.
The Mountaineer,
The Mountaineer is one of the best
mines in this district, and less is said and
known about it than any one here. A
large number of men are employed in it,
and all that can be got out of them or
the managers is this: ‘‘It is doing
nicely.”
The Nevada City.
The Nevada City mine is looking better than at any previous time, and that
is saying a great déal. More bullion is
being takeu out than ever before, aud if
no more prospecting work is done, there
is ore enough in sight te keep the mill
running for a year at least.

The magic SOLODONT supply,
And all those ills before it fly,
AN OLD, TIME ELECTION,
Four Hondred and Five Votes Polled on
Saturday Last.
Nevada City is spasmodica'ly subject
to all kinds of spellsa—gometimes good and
sometimes bad. If something out of the
ordinary course did not happen often or
a rumpus be kicked up a good percentage
of our people would feel very miserable.
The election which teok place on Saturday was one of those spontaneous eutbursts. The notice of the election had
been published in the Transcripr for a
month, and up tosundown on Friday
evening last it wasthe generally accept"ed idea that the aforesaid election would
be as quiet as any of its predecessors, when
no one voted except the members of the
Board of Education and election officers.
Nothing having been said, and nothing
on the surface indicating that a volcano
was to belch forth a work of cvousternatiou, so to speak, the three oli’ members
of the Board, Messrs. Morgan, Suoecraft
and Sikeforth, anneunced that they were
willing toserve another term-if-the ‘people desired them to do so, Everything
looked serene for their unanimous re-election up to the night before the election,
when other Richmonds were thrown into
the field? They were surprised, but having censented te run, net knowing then
that there were others whe would serve,
determined, backed up by their friends,
co go in and make a lively fight. The opposing candidates, mostof them not of
their own volitien, however, were ‘Thos.
8. Ford, J. M. Walling, Alphonso Hartung, KE. Hampton and Leroy Jolinson.
Ford, Walling and Hampton were not
aware that they were candidates until
chey saw the tickets scattered all over
the town, and they did nothing whatever. to secure votes, but on the contrary,
acted indifferent about the matter. It
was a surprise all around—surprise at
the number of votes polled and a surprise
at the result.
John T. Morgan and J. M. Walling
were elected, and there is a tie between
B. N. Shoecraft and A. Hartung. The
vote stood as follows :
Morgan
Walling
Shoecraft
Hartung
Sukeforth..

Just what willbe done in regard to the
chird member of the Board is not defiaitely known. One way is to call another
slection. * If this is not done the County
Superintendent of Schools, W. J. Rogers,
has the power, under the law, to make
the appointment.
What will-be the néxt turmoil ?
The City Election.
The city election today is going on in
an unusually quiet manner, and there
were but very few people on the streets,
Heretofore there have been large crowds
on the streets discussing, the merits of
the various candidates and electioneerig for votes, but today there seems to
be an absence ef that class, aud a
stranger coming here would not dream
chat an important city election was being
held. The election officers glided into
the duties under the new law as easy as
u duck takes to water. The big bugbear
of intricacies which were said to surround
the new thing were all moonshine,
Owing to the early hour of our going to
press we are unable to even conjecture
the result,

The Federal Loan,
At this mine the prospects are very
good fora big mine. The company has
been working under great disadvantage
ever since they started, on account cf
having pumping rigs which were entirely
too light. They have had anew pumping
rig made at the Miners Foundry, ‘which
will be hauled te the mine just as soon
as the reads will permit. The new rig
will be heavier than any in this district,
with the exception of the Providence,
Agsoon as this new pumping machinery
is in place the shaft will be suik 200 feet
deeper, down to the 600 level. The
ledge is a magnificent one, and the fivestamp mill is kept running constantly.
In a few weeks they will have a tenstamp mill.
