The San Francisco Call in answer toa correspondent in Nevada City gives the following information : The printed statement inclosed in your communication te thé effect that “the deepest mine in the world is probably one. of the coal. mines ‘in ths Mons Basin, Belgium, known as the Ste. Henriette des Produits, which was reported in 189] to have struck a rich vein at a depth of 5186 ‘feet—the honor of having the deepest straight-drop shaft however, is claimed for the abandoned Kettenherg mine in Bohemia, which is said to have reached 3778 feet,” is not a correct statement, for the reason there is a record the deepest bore hole in any mine in the world was one made by seme ‘Prussian mining engincers at a diamond mine at Schladebich, ear Halle, a city of Prussian Saxony, which teok them six years to bore and reached a depth of 5735 feet, or 455 feet deeper than a mile. This mine was abandoned. According to La Nature the deepest mine now working is that at Saint Andre du Poirer, in France. There are two shafts, one 5000 feet and the other 3150 feet. Other authorities assert that the deepest mine is the rock-salt bore at Spenseg berg, near Berlin, which has a depth of 4175 feet. Recruits from various parts of the State insist. that there are mining -settlementswhich have never been visited by the Salvationists, se it has been decided to fit out an expedition ona plan similar te that of last year’s southern cavalcade. Owing to the disadvantage which untried cavalrymen have in trying to ride unbroken broncos and yet stay in harmonious relations with the band, the new expedition will travel in a couple of stage coaches and call the vehicles ‘“‘chariots.” About a dozen men will constitute the party and their itinerary will be so planned that they can stay from four ‘ttwelve days in each town. An earlier event than the invasion by the charioteeér:, however, will be a helltire meeting, scheduled for Friday, June 2nd, at the division hgadquarters in San Franciscse. This will be the first of its kind in all the army. Its name explains the nature of it, and the day and evening sessions will be entirely devoted to the subject which the army charges modern preachers with totally neglecting. The leading Salvation officers in the State will participate, and it is proposed to have a rousing demonstration to convince unbelievers that the old orthodox teaching is true, , After that will come a‘Salvation camp meeting at Trestle Glen Park for the two weeks beginning on June 24th, Three meetings a day will beheld, and among the leaders will be Staff Captain McIntyre of Newfoundland, who has just been placed in charge of Southern California. The officers, Major Keppe thinks, should be kept at heme to leai their regular corps; and for the —wission ary work he will choose those whio have no other. important—daties: “Happy Bill,” who was a convincing spirit in the eavalvade, has become a captain and got married, but-he is so well acquainted with the miner and so experienced in frontier chariot driving that he may be sent along to lead the ‘expedition and to correspond for the War Cry—of which he is associate editor, One or twe of the other cavalrymen are also married officers now, and in addition to ‘‘Happy Bill” there is but one of the former band who is likely tu go.. That is Lieutenant Fong Foo See who is an expert musician and a good cook, In addition to the brass band, the charioteers will form aa orchestra, and so musical versatility will be required of those who are to travel. A tent, 40 by 30 feet, will be carried and meetings will be held in that at the smaller settlements. The schedule for the invasion has not yet been made out, and Major Keppel has only formulated a general plan of the line of operation. First the charioteers will proceed to Sacramento and ftom there they will strike eut to the northeast. Auburn will be visited, and’ after occasional stops along the road a long stay will be made at Nevada City. Then they will go to Downieville and probably up into Plumas county.—-On the return the cities through which they will-probebly pass are Oroville, \jaryaville, Yuba City and Woodland, though it is the smaller intermediate towns that the Salvation Army will werk, The campaign will last until the latter part of September and possibly a month longer. Captain Milsaps says the mistake of last year’s cavalcade was in permitting it to stay foronly one or two days in any one camp: There is no pessibility gf effective work in that system, and the rides were so long-andthe broncos so stubborn that the cavalrymen were centinually tired out, This year, though, the men will travel in comparative ease and will stay as long in each town as may be necessary, 9 Tue vast facilities of the J. ©. A few days ago the Tidings asked about the 12 o’clock ordinance at Nevada City, which requires all saloons and bars to be closed at that time: The TRANSokirT immediately rephed that the law was strictly complied wjth ahd that the saloon keepers were glad to comply with the -erdinanée. When we made the mention we did so upon reliable information that séveral saloons opeuly -disobeyed the law. This, it seeias, was true, for the very paper that-said the law was strictly obeyed prints the following in its issue of Monday evening : We are requested by Marshal Getchell ‘to say that owing tothe many complaints made to him he has decided to enforce the 12.0’clock ordinance. All saloons, according to the ordinance, must close at midnight, and the Marshal-hopes that all interested will comply with the law. The above is from the Tidings of. yesterday. Well, my son, we'll explain, The 12 o'clock ordinance was strictly obeyed up to the time the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias assembled in this city. During that weck the saloon keepers thought they should assist in extending every courtesy to the Knights, and kept their places brilliantly illuminated. This and nothing more. Complaint was made against them for yo doing, and the Marshal thought that some of the saloon men might be laboring under the impression thatthe Knights were still here ‘and that it was proper to keep open house, therefore his notice. FATAL ACCIDENT. James Carlyon Killed Inthe North Star Mine. & * Union: Last night was the scene of one of the saddest and most distressing avcidents that has occured in this vicinity for a long time. A mine accident always has ,its horror, but. last night it was worse than ever, when one of Grass Valley's noblest young men departed his life. About half-past eight o'clock. James Carlyon was about to start on his way home frem the North Star mine, where he was employed. © He was on the night shift, but was going home early in order
that’he could go to work this morning to do some painting for Mr, Abadie, the superintendent. The unfortunate young man had been up en the landing and was walking down the steps to go home, when by some means or other he got against a large fly wheel, which threw hiin thirty feet down the shaft. How he came in contact with the wheel is not known, but he must either have thought he was at the bottom of the steps and walked right into the wheel er else he lost his balance and fell against the wheel, which is revolving with tremendous rapidity, He was found thirty feet down the incline shaft. Death was instantaneous, as he never spoke a word or gave @ sign of life after he was found. Nobody saw him get struck, and Daniel Baldwin and John Welch, the men who found the ‘injured man, were about twenty-five away. Mr. Carlyon was taken into the dryhouse and a physician was immediately sent. for. Dr. Jamieson was soon on the scetie and examined the body and found the following injuries: -One bone was broken in the leftarm. The right collar bone broken. The skull was broken over the left. eye ‘and the doctor found a large hole in the back_part of the head. The neck was broken and the whole upper part of the body was badly distigured. Undertake” Harris arrived at the mine and teok charge of the body. Coroner Daniels was sent for and in company with Deputy Coroner Hocking and a Union reporter . he immediately drove to the scene of the accident. After learning the full particulars of ‘the affair a coroner's jury was summoned to appear at the Coroner’s office this morning at following named gentlemen: ‘Thos. TibSamuel Kerths, Paul Quick, Arthur Gill, Matthew. Tonkin and-David Ayers, James Frances Carlyon was born in’ this State in 1869, making him twentytour years of age.
