ELECTRICITY,
Works of the Novada County Electric
Power Company.
Work on the dam for the Nevada
County Electric Power Company on the
South Yuba river is being rapidly pushed
ahead, and there is.no danger now of the
structure being’ damaged by the winter
floods or spring freshets. Dr. H. H.
Clark, the Treasurer and General Mana_. get, has been in Grass Valley for the past
week, says the Tidings, and he is gratified at the progress made. Victor Dorsey has made some excellent photographs
of the work done, showing that the
heavy timbers have been laid, ‘The. dam
will be constructed upon the principles of
an inverted Howe Truss bridge. The lumber for the flume has been ordered, but as
itis a difficult matter to get the lumber
in place, the work of building the flume
will be necessarily slow. A large amount
of blasting will be necessary to secure
proper foundations for the flume.
The machinery for the plant has been
ordered and the company has received
notice that the manufacturers cannot supply the same before April next. By this
time the dam and flume will be completed
and it will take but a short time to place
the machinery in position and run the}
wires to this city. _
The company have already secured
some contracts for furnishing power, but
some of the mine owners are rather
“backward in coming forward” -with
their estimates of the amount of power
needed, The Gold Hill mine has secured
100 horse power and it is thought that 50
horse power more will be needed.
This is one of the best enterprises that
has ever been started in this county and
our mining men should take the earliest
opportunity to secure this cheap power.
Besides this the company would like to
known the aniount of power which they
will have to furnish, before putting in the
plant. This enterprise is no experiment,
as the managers aud shareholders are
men of wealth aid Dr. Clark has had
much experience in the electrical business. The capital’ stock of the company
is $:00,000, and $160,000 of this will he
expended it building the dam, flume and
putting in the plant.
‘There is no doubt of the ultimate suocess of the company, and as it will be of
great benefit, to the mining interests, let
our mining men interview the managers
as soon as poasible.and secure contracts
for power,
The company will also put in an electric
lighting system, which will be extended
to every part of the city, and the rates
will be placed so low that almost everyone can have these lights in their homes.

the fellow had decamped, going ip the
direction of Placer county, It sediiia he
stole the horse and cart at Alta. The
thief came here by way of Grass Valley
and while at the latter place stole a shotgun, which he sold to a party in this

HEARD FROM. PERSONAL MENTION.
A California Adventure as Narrated by aj Social and Other Notes About People Old
Nevada City Man. and Young.
The Pittafield (Maine) Gazette contains
the following. interesting narrative as
giveu to that paper by a Nevada City
gentlemaa :
Dr. Ivory L, Bownan of Nevada City,
Cal., Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bowman, and
their mother, Mrs. R. B. Bowman, of
Hartland, made us a very pleasant visit
last week. Dr. I. L. Bowman went to
California twenty-two years ago, and has
never been in Maine since until now. .
He was engaged in the lumber business
for a long time, but for the past six years
he has been practicing dentistry. He
attended a dental college at Chicago, IIl.,last winter and spring to perfect. him
self in the business, He intends to
return to Nevada City this week after
speuding two pleasant wieks with his
many friends here. His wife, who was
formerly Miss Lenora Barnes of Pittsfield,
Me., is a very earnest workéf in the
cause of Christianity and temperance at
her home in Nevada City. She ‘intends
to visit her friends next fall. Among the
most interesting incidents that Dr. Bowman related to us of California life, was
one which conveyed a very good moral.
He was traveling alone and on_horsebask through a very lonely region and
arrived at what was known as ‘Death
Valley:” As it was almost night he
thought he would stop at a spring near
by until morning, but. just before reaching the spring he was horrified to see a
dead man hanging ina tree. The glaring
and protruding eyes of the dead man
showed plainly that he had been the
victim of foul play and Mr. Bimmediately
decided that he could not do better than
to goon, It was almost dark when he
came in sight of arude house where he
applied for shelter during the night.
The proprietors, ‘an elderly man and
woman, at first said that they could not
possibly keep him, but Dr. Bowman told
them of the body that he had seen ina
tree about a mile away and after much
persuasion they decided to let him stay,
as there was nosettlement within fortyfine miles of the place.
a party of about a dozen reugh, drunken
‘‘cow-boys” came in and acted terribly.
As the manand woman of the house
made no remonstrance to their doings,
Mr. Bowman decided that they were in
league with this band of desperades sand
that his money or his life, perhaps both,
would be wanted befors morning. At
last the band went away and he was
shown to a rough, unfinished room where
there was a rude couch
and a trap door in the center.
ing he would be launched into the
abyss below before morning, he
carefully examined the trapdoor and
found it led to a cellar, He was
now too thoroughly frightened to
lie down or even take off his boots and
soon hearing a low, mumbling sound in
an adjoining room, he placed himself in
a listening attitude, expecting to hear
his death-doom, ‘‘Had we better go to
bed, mother ?” said the man of the house
in a lew tone, ‘‘Yes, father,’ she replied,
‘‘we might as well go to bed, but we had
better go prepared.” . ‘*Well, you read
tonight, mother” he said, ‘for Iam too
nervous,” Then this lady of the wilderness read a chapter in the Bible and they
both bowed down togethér and made an
earnest aud fervent prayer to God for his
watchful care over them through the
night and for the stranger who was lodging
with them. ‘*When I heard that,” said
Mr. Bowman, ‘‘l thought I might as well
go to bed, for people who prayed so
fervently would never harm me, and 1
neyer slept sounder in my life.” After
breakfast the next morning, they asked
him if he was in the habit of hearing the
Bible read, telling him they wished to
have family prayers. ‘I should think
so” said Mr, B. ‘‘for my father was a
preaches aud I have got a praying
mother somewhere in the world now.”
Then a mutual attachment sprang up
betwen them and Mr.~B,, and at their
earnest request, he stopped with them
for two days longer before he resumed
his lonely journey. Moral: It is always
safe to be with people who sincerely and
fervently pray to the God of Heaven.

A Canal Re: pene.
Health is largely dependent upon a regular habit of body. ‘The bowels act as
an important canal for the carrying of
waste matter of the system. “‘ihey, together with the kidney and pores, are
outlets for debris whose presence is fatal
to the body's well-being. Hostetter's
Stomach Bitters is no violent purgative,
but a gentle laxative admirably adapted
to the wants of the constipated, It
never gripes and wrenches the intestines
as all drastric cathartios do, but produces
an action akin to that of an effort of nature. Biliousness, indigestion, with their
associate manifestation, costiveness, are
speedily and completely remedied by this
fine corrective, which also conquers
malaria, sick headache, kidney and rheumatic trouble, and checks premature decay. :
