March 4th the time from San Francisco to New York was 141 hours. On}
May 4th the time was reduced to 121}
hours.
The new sthedule will reduce the}
time from ocean te ocean to 111 hours,
30 minutes; that is 4 days, 15 hours
and 30 minutes, leaving San Francisco
at 7 Pp. M., alter the close of business,
and arriving at New York at 10:35 a.
M., with the mails so assorted as to. Tie chief trouble
permit of immediate ‘delivery. This
is a gain of 29:30 hours on the March
schedule, but as the arrivals at both
ends will be in the morning instead of
in the evening it means a gain of a

Absurd Notions Prevailing Among the
American People.
It is not only-in ‘‘effete monarchies’’
that a foolish distinction is made between those who are, socially speaking, ladies and gentlemen, and others
who, by no fault of their own, can
scarcely aspire to such titles of honor.
It is a-deplorable fact that a great
deul of absurdity in regard to class
distinctious is especially rampant in
America. i
So afraid are we that we shall not
all be considered ‘‘equal’”’ as well as
‘free,’ that we doa ridiculous amount
of standing on our own dignity, and inisting upon the use of certain terms.

fact that, thus far, we have not adopted
the true definition of the. words
“sentician’’ and ‘lady.’ Both
terms, indeed, have been subject to
interpretations as odd as that of the
