MEADOW LAKE.
Hartley’s Latest — Davis’s
Ground Floor Plan.
The old Meadow. Lake properties have
found a purchaser at last in a French
syndicate, and ‘‘Hermit” Hartley, as the
owner is termed, is about, it is said, to
start on a,continental tour with his wife.
This district has passed through many
vicissitudes since the time when a town
of 10,000 inhabitants sprung up like
magic, only to disappear as rapidly when
the great mountams of ore-in the vicinity
were discovered to be valueless from the
fact that no process could be fuund to exHermit
contan. The most extensive locations
were the Excelsior mines, "Nos. T and 2,
and the Union claims. The name of the
former has been immortalized in verse by
the pen of a pioneer mining poet, who
ably depicts theexasperation and disgust
of the men who rode into the camp expetting to find a bonanza, and tramped
back to Virginia City amidst a cloud of
dust and profanity. The following stanza,
which closes the poem referred to, is
highly. suggestive of the prospector’s
feelings on the occasion:

Nevada County’s Plan to Use Dogs
Looks Impracticable.
John G. Nilon at the request of Sheriff
Danster recently addressed a letter to
his cousin, P.W. Harrison, of New
Orleans, La., asking for information as to
the kind of dogs used in the South for
trailing criminals, etc. It will be remembered that the Supervisors at their
last session requested the Sheriff to inform himself on these points, promising
to authorize the purchase of the animals
if the plan was found to be expedient.
The reply to Mr. Nilon’s inquiries is as

gold. The sulphurets, recently tested at
Grass Valley, yielded $176 to the ton.
The parties whu are running a tunnel
under the slide below Shady Flat, have
about reached bedrock.
Geo. M. Pinney, of San Francisco, was
here last Monday, from Sierra City, and
said that further explorations would soon
be made at the Mountain quartz mine.
A concert will be given at Armory
Hall, Downieville, by the Catholics, Wednesday evening, Nov. 18th.
Some good quartz hasrecently been
found in the old Dreadnaught mine, near

“J have made inquiries as you requested. ~ The dogs you want ~“are~-what
we call fox hounds, or ‘nigger dogs.’
They look like red Irish setters. I called
on J. S. Richardson, the largest cotton
planter in the world, who works convicts
and uses these dogs, of which he has
five. He says that money could not buy
them. A pair of trained ones would cost
in Mibsissippi from $75 to $150. They
must be run every day to keep them in
training. This means a great deal of
work, but unless it is done the dogs are
no account for hunting fugitives. Blood

THE WHARTENBY WILL.
A Clause Construed and a Distribution
Ordered.
" Judge Coffey of San Francisco rendered
a decision Saturday, construing a doubtful
provision of the will of the late James
Whartenby. The decision was that
clause 87'of the will as amended by the
codicil did not include Sabie Dunham, a
grandniece of testator, but comprehended
only his surviving brother, William
Whartenby, and Mrs. Emma C, Harris,a
sister.” James Whartenby left no lineal
descendants nor spouse; of his immediate
family only the brother arid sister named
were living at the tine of his death. ~ Sabie
Dunham, the grandniece, was the recipient
of & specitic bequest of $60,000, and all of
his relativos to the remotest degree were
generously remembered in the will, and
have received their legacies in full. A
distribution of the estate has now been
ordered, tlie executors—John R. Whitney,
T. E. Beans and Joseph R. ~English—
hay ing discharged their trust satisfactorily.
Whartenby was a well known mining
man and ditchowner, and in early times
resided in thigcity. Thé property disposed of in his will was appraised at upward
of $1,500,000.

In the meanwhile the accredited
owner, Davis, a millonaire, does not, evidently, propose to leave a stone unturned
to relieve himself of a white elephant,
which has been eating its head off for
. some years past, and in a spirit of liberality makes a proposition to local investora, whereby they are invited to subscribe enough money to pay him for the

a controlling interest. “According toa

100,000 shares of capital stock for $2 per

control of the mine, This kind of a
trade might be carried out successfully
in a granger community, where the residents know more about swine and horseflesh than they do about mining, but it
will hardly. do here, where mines are
handled as gingerly as a red-hot stovelid. The reputation of the Allison
