Why is this not applicable to
merchants. here who haye immense
stocks of goods of the finest-and cheapest qualities which they are willing to
gell at lower prices than the same
articles can be purchased for amywhere else on the Pacific Coast? And
yet they are not selling the quantities
they ought to, for the reason that a
very big per centage of the orders go
to San Francisco and Sacramento.
Why is this? Who is to blame for
this state ef affaira? Theonly answer
to these questions are these: The
local merchants -themselves are to
blame, and nobody else. The. dealers
below are continually reaching out for
interior trade, and thus get the best
cash Customers by advertising their
houses and their goods, yet many
home merchants hereabout are so
short-sighted that they can not see
how their competitors: below get all
the cash customers and they get the
credit customers. It is dune by advertiaing, try to disguise the fact as
ene will. ‘Suppose the merchants
here do sell better goods for less money
than the merchants below, who
knows that fact except themselves?
They studiously avoid exposure on
that point. Let our business men
wake up and boom their attractions
through the local papers. Then we
will hear less growling: about dull
times and about people sending below for goods. If they want to stop
orders going below, they should let
people know that they can give good
bargains near at hand, and that will
stop it on the double-quick. Don’t
keep your business such a profound
secret, neighbors,

a _ Yhe Garnering Time.
Fair-is the world now autumn's wearing,
And the s!uggard sun lies long abed;
Sweet are the days now wiater's nearing,
And all winds feign that the wind ig dead.
Dumb is the hedge whére tlie crabs hang yeliow,
‘Bright as the blossoms of the spring; :
Dumb is the close where the pears crow mellow,
And none but the diuiitiess redbreasts sing. ~
Fair was the spring, but amidst his greening
Gray were the days of the hidden sin;
Fair was the summer, but overweening,
So soon his o'’ersweet days were, done,
Come then, love, for peace is upon us,
Far off is failing, and far is fear:
Here where the rest in the end hath won us,
In the garnering tide of the happy year.
Come from the gray old house by the water,
Where far from the lips of the hungry sea
Green groweth the grass o’er the field of the
slaughter, :
And all is a tale for thee and me.

The Decoration of Prayer Books.
The prayer book tha} the Vanderbilts,
the Astors and other families use for every day, that is to say every Sunday occasion, costs about $30 each. Mrs. Anson Phelps Stokes has just ordered two
$60 silver bound prayer books, and these
will be given to her two daughters on
the occasion of her silver wedding.
Prayer books are used now a great deal
for presents in society, and particularly
‘for wedding presents. The really correct thing, it may -be mentioned, is a
small prayer book bound in white morocco, with’ elaborate silver trimmings
The resulting ¢rnamentation is very rich
and very handsome.

have a quaint and medimwval character.
The work is open work that shows the
cover of the book, and this supplies a
very effective groundwork.
In some cases, however, the book is
completely cased in silver and the silver
is very artistically worked. There is
still a slight demand for ivory covers,
but the demand is so slight it is scarce!.

“Phat Money: Will Buy a Good
Sewing Machine.
The Transcript has within the past
. two years offered many special pre4 miums to its subscribers, and of hunij dreds of people who have availed themselves of the opportunities extended
. to them not one case of dissatisfaction
. has yet arisen. In every instance the
subscriber has been more than delighted with the bargain secured.
The latest.offering includes three
grades of the Chicago Singer Sewing
Machine, a perfect imitation of the
genuine Singer machine and according
to the verdict of hundreds. who have
used both as guod as the original for
all practical purposes.
Three numbers of this admirable
piece of mechanism are advertised and
described on the second page of today’s paper, and full information ‘is
given as to cost of freight to this city,
etc. The manufacturers also supply
other grades up toone with an elaborrately ornamented and full-pearled
bead on a full cabinet case, beautifully
finished with mouldings and elegant
French walnut veneers, gothic cover
with finely veneered panels, and a
chest of drawers inside the case.
Any machine that is not satisfactory
money will be refunded. ~ ;
If you are in need of or thinking o
buying a sewing machine, look into 1
the ‘lzanscriet’s proposition before
paying a fancy price for one that is
certainly no better, perhaps not as good
as the Chicago Singer.
