Considering the limited number of
workmen employed (but one shift) by
the Grass Valley Railway and Tunnel

made in pushing ahead the»big tunnel
from the South Yuba. Jt is however
unfortutidte that’th® force cannot be

event the time when the property wili
be placed on @ self-sustaining basis
will be materially hastened. The proposed route’.of the tunnel is through a
section teeming with rich ledges, and
the enterprise is bound to. ultimately

$ McKiniey?s Bill.
Ata meeting of Democrats during
the_late political campaign the McKinley bill and thesurplusin the National treasury received a most unmerciful coring. It was evicent
that something was radically wrong
with che government accounts, bul
there was one voter present who was
equal to the emergency. He. arose
from his seat and addressed the
assenablage as follows:
“Mr. \Prirident:—Yees have been
talkin’akout the surplus in the treasury
and about McKinley’s bill. Now.

4 GREAT MAGAZINE. .
'Xts Plans Fer 1891.
The Century Magazine is now 80
Well-known that to tell of its past euccess seems almost an old story. The
N. Y. Tribune has said that it_and its
companion, St! Nicholas for Young
Folks, issued by the same house, “‘are
read by every one person-in thirty of
'he country’s population,”—and large
editions of both are sent beyond the
seas, It is an interesting fact that
a few years ago it was found that seven ‘thousand copies of the Century
went to Scotland,—quite a respectable
-dition in itself. The question in
England is no longer “who reads an
American book?” but ‘Who does net
see the American magazines?”
A few. years ago The Century about
doubled its circulation with the famous War Papers, by -General Grant
and others, adding many more readers later with the Lincoln History and
Kenman’s thrilling articles on the
Siberian Exile System.
Qne great feature of 1891 is to be
“The Gold Hunters of California,” describing that remarkable movement
to the gold fields in ’49, in a series Qh!
richly illustrated articles written by
sarvivors, including the narratives oi
men who went to California by the
different routes, accounts of the golu
liscoveries, life in the mines, the
work of the vigilance committees (b)
the chairman of the committees) etc ,
ete. General Fremont’s last writin,
was done for this series. In Novem.
bér appears the opening article, “The
First Emigrant Train to California,”
—crossing the Rockies in 1841,—by
General Bidwell, a pioneer. Thous

the narrative of an American’s travel=

wonderfully rich programme of novelsttes and stories by most of the leading writers, etc., etc.
Itisalso announced that The Cenury has purchased the right to print,

Many people who have taken this
medicine for scrofula, dyspepsia, loss
of appetite, and other troubles, haye
been surprised tbat it should cure this
troublesome cough. But toknow the
actual cause of the cough ig to solve
the mystery. Many cases of consump:
tion can be traced back to the neglect
of some such slight affection as this.
Consumption can be controlled in its
early stages, and the effect of Hood’s
Sarsaparilla in purifying the blood,
building up the general health, and
expelling the scrofulous taint which
is the cause of catarrh and consumption, has restored to perfect health
many persons on whom this dreaded
disease seemed to have a firm hold.
