Justice Court Notes.
Old Tom Stewartson got on another
tear yesterday and had a row with a
woman of the town. In the evening officer Scott arrested him an a charge of disturbing the peace. He was lodged in
the county jail. His trial will take
place Wednesday forenoon before Justice
Mul oy.
Rondini Pietre was arrested by Constable
Dillon last evening on complaint of N.
C. Berriman for cruelty to a mule, and
was taken before Justice Wheeler where
he pleaded guilty and was fined the costs.
The mule died last night. Joe Rinaldi,
owner ‘of the team, and for whom Pietre
was driving, says the mule was sick yesterday and that he bled it in the usual’
and proper form. Pietre used the animal in a brutal manner, according to the
accounts of citizens who watched him,
and they supposed the blood upon it’ was
the result of the kicks he administered
instead of the veterinary treatment.
A Female Impositor.
A former resident of Boston Ravine
named Madame Van Ness; but who is
now living on Spring street in this city,
has been going from house tu house here
for a few days past and practicing an imposition on soft-hearted citizens. She
represents that*her name is McKay and
her home four miles below Grass Valley.
She alleges that two weeks ago a man
and woman in ill health and with four
children stopped at her house awhile en
route to Shasta county, and that they
are sick and destitute. She asks for
money or old clothes for them, and in
several instances has succeeded in gétting
what she wants. This is the same
“woman who recently stole some’ jewelry
from Mrs, Robert. Simmons_and served a
*term in the county jail for it.
Nevada County Cases. _

We have no fighting for our army to

notan easy thing, and so we obey the
injunction, in time of peace prepare for

the smallest number of enlisted men
that will permit the officers to keep in
military practice. A regiment of infantty with thirty-seven officers: and hardly
420 enlisted men seems pretty topheavy,

enlisted men could be arranged as easily

Covering Books.
The books we are most intimate with
are apt to grow more or less defaced by
frequent handling. To restore their at’
tractiveness by concealing the. origina)
covers is a pretty home art quite worthy
of practice. If the book is bound in
black or dark cloth, a silk with black
ground and colored figures) may be
selected for the new covering, asa lighter
ground, unless the silk is very thick, is
apt to be shadowed by the darknese
under it. The cover is cut to fit the
book, much as the slip covers to sshoo!
books are cut, excepting that o'y 8
amall portion is left to turn in on the
wrong side. —Boston Record.
