The most profitable amount of them are the orange, lemon, apricot and raisin-grape. * Riverside is certainly entitled to the honor of being the home of the orange. Here the orange attans perfection ; not being infested by disease or.insect pests of any kind; The groves, which have been so regularly set out, are very attractive and the homes which they.surround have an appearance of permanence and progressiveness. Traly every Riversider has reason to be proud of his home and surroundings. At the New Orleans Exposition the Riverside naval orange was awarded three gold medals for the best oranges "produced in California, in the Uuited States and in the World. It is estimated that in 1888, 300,000 boxes of oranges were shipped’ trom 8, n e » * orchard commands a from $500 to $1500 per he trees. seem s0 enormous, © The lemon is very profitable, but is not so hardy as the orange and so is rot cultivated 80 ere, and yields good results. an unusnally~ large crop yielding a profit of $500 tothe acre. _ The cultivation of the raisin grape is a very important and ‘profitable industry owing to the short period required to obtain an income from it, as well as the profit it insures. One : 2 : The y street just vineyard when six years of age yielded thirteen and a half tons of grapes that were sold at $30 per ton on the vines, a Asal a ea cna, acre. This js rather an exception, however. A few days agolI bad the pleasure of visiting the raisin-packing establishment of Griffin & Skelley. This is the largest packing-house: in Riverside, and at present is employing five hundred hands. The work of packing consists of several departments. The muscatel, a white grape, isthe only variety used for raisins. The grapes are first taken from the vines and placed on trays in the vineyard, where they remain until dried, no artificial heat being needed as in most. other raisin districts of the State. Alter being dried they are placed in sweat-boxes preparatory to being taken tothe packing houses. Upon arriving at the packing houses, the largest and best are sent to the sam ple room where they are most deliciously put up intwo and @ half pound boxes. They look so tempting that a person feels disposed to remain there for some time. We next entered the room where the London layers are put up. Here are employed something like one hundred .and fifty yeung ladies and a third as many young men, all busily employed, standing around tables and working like so many busy bees. The raising are brought in sweat-boxes and placed on the table beforethem, They are then over. hauled and the largest are neatly placed in a box containing a false bottom.” After the box has been filled they are transferred through the false bottom to another box marked. ‘‘London layers.”’ These boxes range from ten to twenty pounds, and as,many as twenty four hundred boxes have been filled ina single day. One very interesting feature was the way in which the boxes were made, one man seemingly doing the box making for the entire establishment, and the ease and rapidity with which he worked was truly wonderful. Seeing him work banished forever the opinion that a woman is the only creature who can hold a dozen clothes pins in her mouth while at work, for this man nailed together so many boxes without replenishing the supply of nails which he was.a legerdemainist and went on to the next -department carrying that conclusion. Here raisins seemed more sbundant than “before; and probably their abundance can be best described by the Irishman. “Shure,” says be, “in owld Ireland a man can’t have a raisin toate, but in Californy he can tramp thim under his fate.” The work in this department, consisting of stemming and grading the rais na, is done by machinery and is decidedly interesting. The raisins are graded in three sizes; large, medium and gmall. boxes of fifty pounds each. ‘It is eatimated that in 1888 two hundred and twenty five thousand boxes of raising were shipped from Riverside, Ore ean gain some idea of the profitablenessof the raisin industry, when told. ie medicing pit oa Ithat eight acres (and four of the eight A.Centinuation of Our Fair Core well supplied with schools, churches, hotels, postoffice and many business An opera house is being constructed and promises to be a magnificent building. In 1888 there was reminding me of m Postmaster General Wanamaker’s themselves above the political “hustler.’ No one doubts that men just as good as those appointed could have been selected from the ranks of the “hustlers.” ' The idea that any political party can remain in power that refuses to reward its workers should have been made sufficiently clear by the defeat of Mr. Cleveland last year. In short the political “hustler” is a necessary factor to political success, recognition is necessary tothe “‘hustler.” This is practical politics, and only practical politics can’ carry elections, ‘ The three America’s Congress returned from its Jong excursion this week.
