WASHINGTON DISTRICT.
A Grand Field for Quartz Minime—Kicks
at the County Seat.
Eprror Transcrret—It has been some
time since our little town of Washington
has been heard from. . It would seem that
we are dead, buriedand forgotten. Perhaps we would be if it were not for soine
of our good people who like to stir up a
little life'once in awhile.
Our mines that are working move along
quietly and their managers don’t have

he predicted for -us a future of wondrous prosperity. He asserted that Truckee possessed natural advantages which
tnust necessarily allure capital. ““‘I can
hardly think of a place on the coast,” said
he, ‘‘that offers superior inducements for
enterprise and investments.” Such words,
from such an authoritive source, should
make the few croakers‘of-Truckee hide
their faces for shame. It will not, however, for, asa fact, most of the croaking
is done by those who have an object in
view. If any one talks of starting an ice
pond, there are scores of men ready to
pour a tale of woe into his ears, about
the certainty of the ruin which will overtake him. The competition of machine
ice, the relentless charges of the railroad
company, the fact that the ice business is
overdone, and the implacable hostility of
the Union Ice Company, are. only a few

“Yeival o newspaper we would ‘probably fall
of the arguments employed to terrify the
stockholders of the new company. In
any other business-now-earried-on—in-this:
region, the same class of men stand ready
to discourage the new comer, and for the
same selfish reasons. If some capitalists
into line and do some responsible croaking ourzelves. But we speak of the icebusiness in particular, for two reasons ;
lirst, every company for years haa prosperedbeyond the must sanguine expectation of its shareholders, and ‘every share
of stock in natural ice companies pays big
its scare, and is taking held of the. ice
business in earnest. We have seen the
ice market increase from year to year until it now demands 125,000 tons annually
‘and it requires only mathematical dem=:
ons:ration to prove that the present demand will be doubledin five years. ‘This
is the basis upon which the new capital
will,work. From the determination and
enterprise already displayed, it seems
quite likely that at least one of Truckee’s
industries, the harvesting of ice, is about
to receive proper attention. In the near
future,-other industries will spring up
which will yield fortunes to those who invest inthem. Croakers may r.tard and
intimidate capital for awhile, but enterprise ultimately triumphs. Truckee has
the resources, and capital will come and
develop them.

THE ALLISON RANCH
The New Deal Makes . Progress Slowly in
London.
A News Letter correspondent writing
from London about the condition of the
stuck market in that city says: ‘The
Allison Ranch offer does not seem to
make any progress here, so far as I can
learn. The fact is that mining speculation has been killed by the enormus plun:
der ‘scooped’ on all the new companies }
introduced of late years, and it will take
a long time before any new legitimate demand springs up for’ mining schemes.
Judging from the class of mines continually coming forward from Grass Valley, it
would seem that district is livmg on its
reputation, and the poor. abandoned
mines are sought to be passed off on the
Britishers, on the record of the few good
mines that have paid, or are still paying.”
The correspondent does a rank in, fualice
to Grass Valley, whichis today the most
productive gold” mining region in the
world. The Allison Ranch is doubtless
a good property, and although its owner
has seen fit to attempt to over-capitalize
it that is no reason for throwing mud at
the whole district.
Nevada City district; which adjoins
Grass Valley, is fast coming into equally
enviable position and within a comparatively short time will be alongside of it.
The two sections have about equal resources, but up this way we have not for a
few years past brought the concentration
of effort to bear that our neighbors have.
But we are getting there now. .

A Now Electric Rallway.
It aima at connecting a moving car
with an electric conductor buried beneath the roadbed without the use of an
open slot. To effect this there is laid in
the center of the track a crenelated contact plate or rail in short sections, This
will be only half an inch in width on the
surface and will be quite different in its
effect upon vehicles from the ordinary {
car rail; wheels will crosa it without difficulty at any anglo, as they cannot slide
along it for more than a few inches.
Korses will also find a good foothold
upon it,
The short sections of the plate are en.
tirely disconnected from each other, each
piece being coupled by a wire to the eleotric conductor beneath. In this wire is
an automatic switch which makes
circuit between the section and the conductor as the car comes over it and
passed. Only three sections are ever
connected with the car at one time, and
generally there are only two. A strong
wire brush on the car rubs alon ; the sections and conveys the currents front

flows to the rails and to earth,
The qutomatic switch is simplicity itself and consists merely of an electromagnet, an armature and two contact
pieces, Supposing that: the car brush is
in contact. with ony of the sections, the
current will flow from the main conductor across one contact tothe armature, through the armature to a second
contact, thence through the magnet coila
tothe section and the motor, and as the
car proceeds it successively takes seotions into circuit and drops them out,—

How Man Eating Tigers Develop.
There is a man eating tiger abroad now
In the central provinces, India, which
had the temerity to attack the chief commissioner’s advance camp and carry off
& cook. This animal is atill killing at
the rate of about two persons a week, and
areward of 200 rupees ison ita head,
Not far off a man eating tigress has just
been “shot over a human “kill,” at the
foot of the Satpura hills, in thy Balaghat
district. Both these animals are believed
to have been converted into man eaters
by: bullet wounds from the native matchlock—fresh instances of the mischief thatisdone by the present system of rewards.
A reward of fifty rupees is enough to
induce any villager to try his luck ata
pot shot, with the frequent result of converting a comparatively harmless animal
intoascourge of the country side. Whereas if tho reward were removed the shooting would be left to the professional
hunters; who-would-still-findabundant
inducement in the value of the skina and
the fees they would get from the villagers in cases where a tiger had become
troublesome by his attacks upon cattle.

They Differed . on Religion.
A young bride of McLean county, Ky.,
has most positively manifested the truth
of the old -doggerel:» If ahe will she will, you may depend out;
If she won't she won't, aud there's an end on't,
She was married in the evening, and
then the party repaired to the house of
the bride, ‘oom, where the wedding supper was served. After the repast a discussion arose about religion, and the
bride and bridegroom found that they
entertained widely different views. The .
controversy became earnest, then warm,
and finally rudely contradictory, so much
so that the bride became offended and
the guests retired. When they were
gone the bride refused to be reconciled.
She sat in her chair all night, and when
. MOFHing Caine she set Out on foot for her . =
father’s house, refusing any company or
to ride on a horse offered her by the
-hridecroom. — Atlanta Journal.
