Ex-Chiet Justice Niles Searls said in a Truckee’s resources for many gears, and he predicted for -us a future of wondrous prosperity. He asserted that Truckee possessed natural advantages which tnust necessarily allure capital. ““‘I can hardly think of a place on the coast,” said he, ‘‘that offers superior inducements for enterprise and investments.” Such words, from such an authoritive source, should make the few croakers‘of-Truckee hide their faces for shame. It will not, however, for, asa fact, most of the croaking is done by those who have an object in view. If any one talks of starting an ice pond, there are scores of men ready to pour a tale of woe into his ears, about the certainty of the ruin which will overtake him. If some capitalists into line and do some responsible croaking ourzelves. But we speak of the icebusiness in particular, for two reasons ; lirst, every company for years haa prosperedbeyond the must sanguine expectation of its shareholders, and ‘every share of stock in natural ice companies pays big its scare, and is taking held of the. ice business in earnest. We have seen the ice market increase from year to year until it now demands 125,000 tons annually ‘and it requires only mathematical dem=: ons:ration to prove that the present demand will be doubledin five years. ‘This is the basis upon which the new capital will, work. From the determination and enterprise already displayed, it seems quite likely that at least one of Truckee’s industries, the harvesting of ice, is about to receive proper attention. In the near future,-other industries will spring up which will yield fortunes to those who invest inthem. Croakers may r.tard and intimidate capital for awhile, but enterprise ultimately triumphs. Truckee has the resources, and capital will come and develop them. ELLE ELLEN'S WILL. The Struggle For the Estat Commences Tomorrow Morning. It provides that if Annie dies first her share shall-go to Emma. As . Annie died first and then Emma died, the property goes to Emina’s child under the law. A News Letter correspondent writing from London about the condition of the stuck market in that city says: ‘The Allison Ranch offer does not seem to make any progress here, so far as I can learn. The fact is that mining speculation has been killed by the enormus plun: der ‘scooped’ on all the new companies } introduced of late years, and it will take a long time before any new legitimate demand springs up for’ mining schemes. Judging from the class of mines continually coming forward from Grass Valley, it would seem that district is livmg on its reputation, and the poor. abandoned mines are sought to be passed off on the Britishers, on the record of the few good mines that have paid, or are still paying.” The correspondent does a rank in, fualice to Grass Valley, whichis today the most productive gold” mining region in the world. The Allison Ranch is doubtless a good property, and although its owner has seen fit to attempt to over-capitalize it that is no reason for throwing mud at the whole district. It aima at connecting a moving car with an electric conductor buried beneath the roadbed without the use of an open slot. To effect this there is laid in the center of the track a crenelated contact plate or rail in short sections, This will be only half an inch in width on the surface and will be quite different in its effect upon vehicles from the ordinary { car rail; wheels will crosa it without difficulty at any anglo, as they cannot slide along it for more than a few inches. Korses will also find a good foothold upon it, The short sections of the plate are en. tirely disconnected from each other, each piece being coupled by a wire to the eleotric conductor beneath. In this wire is an automatic switch which makes circuit between the section and the conductor as the car comes over it and passed. Only three sections are ever connected with the car at one time, and generally there are only two. A strong wire brush on the car rubs alon ; the sections and conveys the currents front them to the electric motor, whence i¢ flows to the rails and to earth, The qutomatic switch is simplicity itself and consists merely of an electromagnet, an armature and two contact pieces, Supposing that: the car brush is in contact. with ony of the sections, the current will flow from the main conductor across one contact tothe armature, through the armature to a second contact, thence through the magnet coila tothe section and the motor, and as the car proceeds it successively takes seotions into circuit and drops them out,— New York Times.
