’ The pt reform of those bodily evils,
aD
. We have here as good
clothing stores as there is in the
San Francisco stores. Agents are
also around taking orders from
families in the various towns for
groceries and dry goods. Why is
’ that the towns in which they regide should go down, or will they
“yeject all importunities of these
traveling agents. These agents,
or most of them, represent houses
unheard of before, and for that
‘reason we believe they are exglusively places doing business on a
small scale. We warn our people
against giving patronage to any o!
them. We can boast of good
stocks of goods, honorable dealing,
low prices, and as great a variety
“of articles as can be found in any
town in California. By patronizing these fellows, you make your
owa town poorer and the San
_ Francisco houses richer. It may
-be argued that some kinds of ar‘ticles that these chaps have cannot be purchased here. Suppose
~ they cannot; give your orders for
anything to any business man in
town and he will be glad to ac‘commodate you, and besides. you
will have a responsible man to go
back, on if the article does not suit.
Every dollar sent abroad for articles that can be purchased here,
makes business duller here; and
it affects every man in the community, 98 well as decreasing the
taxable property of the county.
What encouragement, by pursuing such a course, do you give the
-.« chant to keep on hand a varievy of goods in his line, suitable
for all classes? None at all. He
is necensarlly compelied to charge
‘higher prices, in order to meet his
expenses, while those San Francisco fellows reap all the profit.
There are a thousand reasons why
you should patronize home industry, and we propose to impress the
importance of the matter on the
minds of our ple. Patronize.
home, first, last and all the time.
-In the foregoing remarks we have
no reference to agents visiting our
city and representing houres doing a wholesale business exclusively.
