MYSTEKIOUS Gas.
it Ktlls One Man aud Prostrates
Nine Others.
Stage driver Gaffney says that
early Sunday. morning, at Whiskey.
Diggings in Sierra county, twenty
miles north of Downieville, Mark
Schofield, a promineat inine owner,
saw what appeared to be a large volume of blue smoke issuing from the
mouth of the tunnel to his drift claim . :
where work has been carried on regularly for anumber of years past.
BSchofield remarked tohie wife that .
he thonght the timbers must be -afire,
and that he would go in and see if he . .
could prevent the flames from spreading t» the portion of the tunnel used
as a powder magazine. He entered,
and not emerging within a reasonable
* length of time Mrs. Schofield asked
another man to follow him and see
what was the reason. The second
man soon returned saying that he had
reached Schofield’s body not very far
from the mouth and was about to
bringit out when he felt himself succumbing and had to retreat. The
neighborhood was quickly alarmed
and eight more men came to the rescue. They all tried to enter, but
were unable to do so. The “blue
smoke,” which proved te be a poisonous gas, drove them back and it
was with difficulty that annmber got
out alive. Two fell unvonscious near
the mouth and had to be dragged out
by their comrades, At last accounts
Schofield’s body had not been recovered and a messenger had been sent
to Downieville for assistance.
