The Ballot Law.
Arthur McEwen in one of his letters
relates some of the ‘inside opposition’
to the so-called Australian ballot law.
He says: A politician, who held office
under Buckley’s regimie and was ia the
confidence of that_regretted boss, tells
me that a dead set is to be made against
the Australian ballot law when the
Legislature meets, and that Sam Kainey,
Buckfey’s former partner, is to general
the attacking forces. The amending
bill, Practically equivalent to a repeal,
has, accurding to my informant, already
been drawu. As he is a lawyer I suspect
that he has himself had a hand in drawing it. ‘That law has got to go,” he
explained, ‘‘becayse st kills the trade of '
the politicians. The gang simply can’t
work under it, Asa citizen, . think it’s
the best scheme ever devised, for it puts
an end to bulldozing, and leaves mighty
little chance for vote buying. But-as a
politician, I am against it for . naturally
don’t want to go out of business.”
California Papers.
Chas. T. Diehl, manager of the Westecn Association Press talked tu a Call reporter recently and among other things
said: 4
California journalism is the only really
original journalism in the United States
today, and Calitornia papers are copied by
the New York journals more than all the
other papers in the country put together.
I don’t know that the men are any more
original than those on Eastern papers, but
they have more original subjects around
them and can do better work with greater
ease.
To this the Los Angeles Express adds
the following: »
‘California may be behind the great East
in some respects, but certainly not in regard to her newspapers. The press of this
State, population considered, represents a
high standard of ,fnterprise and ability.
Our papers pay much more for news, as a
rule, in proportion to theircirculation,
than those published in the cities and
towns of the East.
The South Idaho.
A meeting of the Directors of the
South Idaho Consolidated Mining and
Milling Company was held last evening,
and the following officers were elected:
James McKenna, President; Joseph
O’Keefe, Vice President; W. H. Crase,
Treasurer; W. J. Rogers, Secretary. The
company intend to push developments at
the South Idaho as soon as the weather
will permit. The prospects for a good
mine are flattering indeed. A shaft has
been put down to the depth of 50 feet and
a drift run at.that depth, the dis:ance of

looking quartz, showing galena, sulphurets and gold; the ledge is from 18

DISPOSED OF by January .tst, 1993, as I will then
quit business here after a successful career of twenty years.
And now a few words fellow citizens, which it will be
worth your. while*to read and think over. ‘
The goods in my store are new in styles, fresh in makeup and of the very best quality. They were bought for
this market and to meet the wants of our own people. I
never would, and will not now, carry shoddy ends and
odds, but have always made it a point to offer for sale
ouly the BEST OF EVERYTHING to be had. Every
person who comes to my store/to trade therefore gets a
dollar's worth of goods for oné hundred cents, and no oné
who ever traded with me will say to the contrary. If I
had not done business in this way I could not have continued to have a large trade in Nevada county for so many
years. Is not that true ? :
Storekeepers have come and have gone and have come
again, while I hive continued here right along doing business in a business-like way. eee
All this time I have maintained my credit with the
wholesalers by paying for what I got, and have maintamed
the confidence of my customers by giving them just what
they paid for MY PRICES HAVE BEEN THE
VERY LOWEST CONSISTENT WITH SQUARE
METHODS AND GOOD GOODS, and no competitor
who carried on his biisiness in the same way ever did or
ever could undersell me. Any assortment of poorly made
goods, manufactured from flimsy stuff and out-of-date in
pattern, is not now and never was in.competition with the
superb line I carry, The people generally understand
this pretty well. j
And now in conclusion I desire to say again that everything in my store (bought fresh from the leading Eastern
markets as my freight bills will show and the railroad people will tell you) is being
