THR STATE CHAIRMEN ‘TALK. the Sitaation. Both the Chairman of the and Democratic State Central Committees of this State have been interviewed:.on the coming election. H Chairman Popper of the Democ ratic Committee, when asked if he thought Cleveland would be elected, replied: “] think he will because in the eléction of two years ago there was an indication of a great revolution in the opinion of the people on the question of the tariff, and as in many States there have been no tests, since then we may, yegard the election os a forerunner of general Democratic victory this year, for I know of nothing that has occurred since those elections to again Republican send the people back into the belief in the benefits of a protective policy, a belief\which, as those elections indicated, has been pretty thoroughly dissipated. During the two years that have. passed since those elections, the. question of tariff has been arguéd ani written about exhaustively, and a great deal of literature has been sent out with th: result, I thing, that it is now generally believed by the voters that a high tariff does not produce high wages and prosperity, and that the Democratic principles in this matter are the correct ones.’ Chairman Meyers of the Republican Committee said: “The country generally, undér Mr. Harrison’s administration; has been exceedingly prosperous. Tiie tariff question, as applied by the so-called McKinley bill, I déém of vital importance to the future prosperity of this country. This Government requires a large revenue to meet the necessary expenses of the coantry. This revenue, in my opinion, can be best raised by placing a tariff upon such articles as come in direct competition with the goods manufactured in this country. Thus speak. First, we raise the necessary funds required by the Government to conduct its business, and secondly, we protect American industries as against foreign competition. For the past thirtyone years the Republican party has been the party of progress, and the adininstration of Harrisoa has been equal to the best administration of any President during that period. I believe that the peo ple of this country fully appreciate this, , fully understand that Mr. administration means a clean, honest and Harrison's conservative government, and I believe the people are desirous of continuing suc, an administration as President Harrison has given us during the past three years and a half.” Daye of ‘*'49."" Chas.Grimes, LEADING CLOTHIER, Corner Broad and Pine Streets, Nevada City nd. Uut Sal Is still in progress and the people of Neveada City and surrounding country;are coming in big numbers to take idvantage of it. Eve srything inthe store HAS TO BE DISPOSED OF by January tst, 1993, as I will then “. quit business here after a successful career of twenty years And now a few words, fellow citizens, which: it will be worth your while to read and think over. ; The goods in my store are new in styles, fresh in makeup and of the very best quality, They were bouzht for this market and to meet the wants of our own people. . never would, and will not now, carry shoddy ends and odds, but have always made it a point to offer for sale nny the BEST OF EVERYTHING to be had. . Every person who comes to my store to trade» therefore gets a lollar’s worth of goods for one hundred cents,-aud no one who ever traded with me will say to the contrary. If . had not done business in this Way I could not have continued to have a large trade’ in Nevada county for so many years. Is not that true ? Storekeepers have come and have gone and have come igain, while . have continued here right-along doing business in a business-like way. All this time I have maintained my ctedit with the wholesalers by paying for what I got, and have maintained the confidence of my customers by giving them just what they. paid for. MY PRICES HAVE BEEN THE VERY LOWEST CONSISTENT WITH SQUARE METHODS AND GOOD GOODS, and no competitor who carried on h’s business in the same way ever did or ever could undersell me. Any assortment of poorly made goods, manufactured from flimsy stuff and out-of:date. in pattern, is not now and never was in competition with the superb line I carry. The people generally understand this pretty well, and now in conclusion I desire to say again that everything in my store (bought fresh from the leading Eastern markets as my freight bills will show and the railroad people will tell you) is being.. ( Sold At a Sacri For the simple reason, as I have told you before in my advertisements, that I am going out of business here and
