THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1889 eS Tuceday Night's Fire. Shortly after ten o'clock Tuesday evenifig the local fire department was called out by the burning of the barn .on E, Weiss’s brewery property on Sacramento _ street. Company attached to the Piety Hill hose, which had been attachéd to the hydrant ‘near Cooper’s lnmber yard, and thus prevented the flames from communicating to the brewery building situated about 75 feet to.the north. Nevada Company connected with the plug in front of H. CG. Mills’s house at the summit of Depot Hill, but by reason of a brexk inthe hose could not get a stream on. The barn together with eighteen tons of hay and three sets of harness was totally destroyed, involving a loss of about $1,000, and there-was no insurance. There were seven horses rescued from the burning building. .As they were being driven out the frantic animals dashed into the crowd, knocking over Wm. H. Smith, Jr., and a young man named Brinkmann and one or two other parties. who were slightly injured. The fire seemed to have been of incendiary origin, as none of Mr. * Weiss’s family-were in the barn after 5 o’clock Pp. Mm. and had no light there. Messrs. Hennessy and Lane, the liverymen, were promptly on hand as usual with horses to assist ‘in-bauling the hose carts to the scene of trouble, These gentlemen are entitled to the gratitude of the community for the assistance they thus gratutiously render on-slich occasions, Lasts Fireat Cherokee, —— ‘At ten o’clock Tuesday morning the kitchen roof of the dwelling house at Cherokee owned by County Clerk Morgan and occupied by the family of W. H. Hicks and the owner’s mother, caught fire from the stove-pipe. The citizens tarned out promptly as soon as the alarm was given, and by gallant work prevented the flames from communicating to the main part of the house. They moved out all the furniture, fearing that the entire building would be destroyed, and when the blazo was extfnguished they moved the things back in again; Nothing was lost or broken. It» will cost abont $40 to repair the kitchen roof. Thereis noinsurance. Among tne best workers at the fire were John Henry Ackwood, a colored man, and two Chinamen. Asa rule people of the latter race are not of any account in such ati emergency. ‘One lady. who lives near by rushed into the House during the hight of the exéitement and putting the infant shé was carryingon the floor of the sitting-room rushed out again. When she got outside she forgot where the baby was, and was in a much disturbed frame of mind till a gentleman found and restored it to her. ‘ A Trail ot Stiver. Just before tha fire alarm” Tuesday night J, Waod, the gravel miner from Washington district who was in town on his way below to enjoy his wealth, had a twenty dollar gold-piece changed for silver which he put in his pants pocket. At the first clang of the bells he mada a dash for the locality of the fire, going at race-horse speed. When he got. back to the hotel he discovered that he had no money in hia pocket. He also discovered in the pocket a hole worn by carrying around so much coin, and through which his twenty dollars had leaked. Te hole has been sewed upand a purse purchased. A Bich River Claim. J. Wood who has been working ‘the Hathaway river claim on the South Yubaa short distance east of Washington brought down with him Tuesday a magnificent collection of nuggets ranging in value from three to forty dollars apiece. The mine is an old one and has produced much wealth in years gone by ; but Mr. Wood found unworked spots that paid ona fortynine basis. It is claimed that one pan of dirt from a crevice yielded over $600. There is yet in the hills and vales of Nevada county five times as much gold as has ever been taken out, cennsinaiiida dh paeeEaiened Native Daughters? Meeting.
