Tuceday Night's Fire.
Shortly after ten o'clock Tuesday
evenifig the local fire department was
called out by the burning of the barn
.on E, Weiss’s brewery property on
Sacramento _ street.
Company attached to the Piety Hill
hose, which had been attachéd to the
hydrant ‘near Cooper’s lnmber yard,
and thus prevented the flames from
communicating to the brewery building situated about 75 feet to.the north.
Nevada Company connected with the
plug in front of H. CG. Mills’s house at
the summit of Depot Hill, but by
reason of a brexk inthe hose could
not get a stream on. The barn together with eighteen tons of hay and
three sets of harness was totally destroyed, involving a loss of about
$1,000, and there-was no insurance.
There were seven horses rescued from
the burning building. .As they were
being driven out the frantic animals
dashed into the crowd, knocking over
Wm. H. Smith, Jr., and a young man
named Brinkmann and one or two
other parties. who were slightly injured. The fire seemed to have been
of incendiary origin, as none of Mr.
* Weiss’s family-were in the barn after
5 o’clock Pp. Mm. and had no light there.
Messrs. Hennessy and Lane, the
liverymen, were promptly on hand as
usual with horses to assist ‘in-bauling
the hose carts to the scene of trouble,
These gentlemen are entitled to the
gratitude of the community for the assistance they thus gratutiously render on-slich occasions,

Fireat Cherokee,
——
‘At ten o’clock Tuesday morning
the kitchen roof of the dwelling house
at Cherokee owned by County Clerk
Morgan and occupied by the family of
W. H. Hicks and the owner’s mother,
caught fire from the stove-pipe. The
citizens tarned out promptly as soon
as the alarm was given, and by
gallant work prevented the flames
from communicating to the main part
of the house. They moved out all the
furniture, fearing that the entire
building would be destroyed, and
when the blazo was extfnguished
they moved the things back in again;
Nothing was lost or broken. It» will
cost abont $40 to repair the kitchen
roof. Thereis noinsurance.
Among tne best workers at the fire
were John Henry Ackwood, a colored
man, and two Chinamen. Asa rule
people of the latter race are not of any
account in such ati emergency.
‘One lady. who lives near by rushed
into the House during the hight of
the exéitement and putting the infant
shé was carryingon the floor of the
sitting-room rushed out again. When
she got outside she forgot where the
baby was, and was in a much disturbed frame of mind till a gentleman
found and restored it to her.
‘
A Trail ot Stiver.
Just before tha fire alarm” Tuesday
night J, Waod, the gravel miner from
Washington district who was in town
on his way below to enjoy his wealth,
had a twenty dollar gold-piece changed for silver which he put in his pants
pocket. At the first clang of the bells
he mada a dash for the locality of the
fire, going at race-horse speed. When
he got. back to the hotel he discovered
that he had no money in hia pocket.
He also discovered in the pocket a hole
worn by carrying around so much coin,
and through which his twenty dollars
had leaked. Te hole has been sewed upand a purse purchased.
A Bich River Claim.
J. Wood who has been working ‘the
Hathaway river claim on the South
Yubaa short distance east of Washington brought down with him Tuesday a
magnificent collection of nuggets
ranging in value from three to forty
dollars apiece. The mine is an old
one and has produced much wealth
in years gone by ; but Mr. Wood found
unworked spots that paid ona fortynine basis. It is claimed that one
pan of dirt from a crevice yielded over
$600. There is yet in the hills and
vales of Nevada county five times as
much gold as has ever been taken out,

A Great, Producer.
The sack of 124 pounds of gold that
passed through town the other day on
its way from Grant & Apple’s quartz
mine on Kanaka creek between Chips
Flat and Alleghany was valued at
$24,000. The owners have to date
taken out $50,000 there at a cost for
time and labor not &ceeding $1,000.
They have but one man employed to
work with them, The claim was
abandoned twenty or more years ago
by ‘parties who had run.a long tunnel
on it, When Messrs, Graut.& 4pple
took possessiou they had to extend
the tunnel but fifteen of twenty feet
further to encounter the bonanza that

It affords me great pleasure to send to you
this voluntary statement of my experience in
testing the merits of Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla, For the past five yearsI have been
troubled with an exceedingly sluggish liver,
including loss of appetite and distress after
eating, pains in the back and kidneys, and
boils around my neck and face. I tried many
liver remediés, only gétting temporary relief.
oI was recommended to try a bottle of “The
California Remedy’. Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla as a test, and while taking the first
hottle I became convincedvof its merits, for I
could feel it was working a change in me.
T took five bottles, and during that time my
troubles left me. Everything is working full
and regular, in fact it has cleansed, purified
and braced me up generally. I feel like another man. You are at liberty to use this as

A Woman Stops Suiciding Because It Hurt. :
Shortly after dark Tuesday evening Abbie Alleu, a woman living in a
house of bad repute situated on Com<4
merialc street, tried to commit suicide
by gouging herself in the left wrist
with a pair of scissors, She made five
‘Sr six superficial scratches near the
main artery, then desisted because the
operation hurt too auch. Another
sent for Marshal Neagle who. lodged!
her in jail where she now is,"
The Marshal found in her possession
a revolver which she saya she would
have used to,put herself out of trouble
if some Officious person had not removed the cartridges from it. She
further stated that on a former occa:
sion she tried to kill herself with
landunum, but had‘such terrible pains
that she would never fool with that
drug any more.
Abbie Allen, which is an assumed
name, is about 25 years old, rather
good looking,and when. sober is pleasant appearing. When in l.quor, bowever, she is violent and foul-mouthed;
Sheformerly resided at Placerville
ture in pawn. She has made her headquarters here for six months or. so
past, alternating between this city
and Forest Hill. For several weeks
she has-been drinking heavier than
ever. On the f3th of last month, after
she-had been on a protracted spree,
sho was jailed at her owir request, “as
she said she was afraid she would
make trouble if she remained at large.
A few days after she was, released on
promising to drink nomore. “She has
recently been indulging again freely,
and the authorities talk of sending her
up for insanity now if she will not go
to her sister who is said to be willing to give hera good home provided
she quita-ber bad ways,
She owes a few dollars here for rent
and provisions, and her inability to pay
the debts appears to be one of her
main causes of worriment.
