A Big, Bravo Man.-\ht
Captain Bassett, the courtly and aged
doorkeeper of the Senate, says that Senator
Davis, of Illinois, was never so large a man,
physically, as was Senator Lewis, of Alabama, who represented his. State from ‘44
to 'S3. Honays that Senator Lewis was at
one time noted for a distinguishing mark of
courtesy in the face of almost certain
death. He was on.the mail boat between
Wilmington and Charleston, one mooulight
night in 47, when the vessel wollided off
Hatteras witha larger steamer, and the
mail boat was found tobesinking. Senator
Lewis was tho last man to leave the sinking
ship whilo passengera wero being transferred to tho uninjured vessel, because, as
he said; ‘“Itis bettec for.one big man like
me to die than to capsize a boat in which
there are other valuable lives,” Captain
Bassett says that Senator Lewis, of Alabama, and Senator Davis, of Illinois, were
the two heaviest, and, at the same time,
most courteous gentlomen ever in the Senate; and his memory runneth away back
into the early days. aan
