RRS PPE ae oe here ee ee pe a < ’ tion. You may do things in your life ‘Has Double the Circulation of , t 4 e » he Daily Transcript. any Daily Paper published North of Sacramento. CIRCULASL, ON Nevada City, Grass Valley, Rough & Ready, Spenceville, North San Juan, French Corral, Sweetland, North Bloomfield, Moore’s Flat, Graniteville, Truckee, and every other town of Nevada county; alsoin Placer and Sierra counties, at Sacramento, San Francisco—in fact, throughout the State “from Siskiyou to San Diego, from the Sierra to the Sea.’”’ Published Daily (Mondays excepted) by —BROWN & CALKINS-— OFFICE: +» \ No. 82 Commercial street, Nevada City, Cal. SATURDAY SEPT, 17, 1887. Se FARMING. ; All About o Little Farm Well Tilied. Heretofore California has been charEvérything in the way of agriculture was done ona large scale. Old settlers had no confidence.in the success of small fafms. ‘‘If men with large ranches,’ it was argued, ‘‘only make a comfortable living, it naturally follows that a family with a small farm will starve.” This is especially the case as relates to the lands of Neyada county. Many of the old settlers are still skeptical about the wisdom of trying to maintain a family on the products of small farms and orchards. © But the skepticism is slowly. giving.way to the cold logic of facts, and there is now-an increasing tendency to divide up the large tracts of land into smaller holdings, and to devote more time to the cultivation and enriching of the soils, and the care of. vines und fruit trees. ‘Itis an undeniable fact tlat at the present time many of the ranchers of this county are ‘‘land poor.” They have too much unproductive land. The cost of the original investment and the expense of maintaining the improvements on these large tracts Keep their owners heavily in debt and abeorb a large portion of the income in the payment of taxes, interest, etc. “ On the other hand, those who purchase only such quantities of land as they can profitably cultivate, have no unproductive capital. All of this labor and expense go immediately into products that find 9 ready market. Asa result, although they have not'so great. possibilities of large incomes, yet they have more certain and uniform profits than those who,are encumbered with large tracts of lands and large indebtedness. One great inducement for the settlement and cultivation of emall tracts here in Nevada county is that there is always a home market for all the products of the farm, orchard and garden. A number of varieties of mountain raised fruits and vegetables command a better price in our local markets than valley producte—notably~otatoes, apples, peaches and en7¥)) fruits. The result demonstrates the fact that asmall orchard wel} tilled, is better than a large orch@i-4 neglected, or in other words, that small tracts of land, in Nevada county as well as in other counties, can be made profitable investments to their owners. Don't be a Loafer. Young man, don’t be a loafer; don’t keep company with loafers; don’t hang about loafers’ resorts.. Better work for nothing than to hang around with hands in your pockets. It is better for your health, better for your reputathat are barely pardonable, but if you show a disposition to do right after experience has proved a good teacher, you will find those who have ‘been through the mill” your best friends. Many a lawyer has got a paying client by workirig for a poor;man who could not pay: Many a doctor has got a good practice by attending closely toa poor one. Such is the world. ‘‘To him that hath shall be given.”’ Keep busy and mind your chances. We notice some dissolute, careless and unpretentious young men in Nevada City. Brace up, boys, and do something for yourselves. Industry will win in the race of life, and it commands the respect of the better class of people, which should be prized above everything else by one who is gifted or inherits a noble nature. + ~@e + Misery After Eating Is avoided by dyspeptics who, guided by the recorded experience of thousands, begin and sysetmatically purgue a course of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Persistence in the use of this ure and highly accredited stomachic, is the sole and agreeable condition ot the entire removal of the obstinate forms of dyspepsia, no less than a temporary fit of indigestion. In connection with the use of this specific, it is desirable to avoid articles of food which ‘individual experience has shown to be difficult of digestion, b the stomach sought to be benefited. Each dyspeptic’s past observation of his digestive capacity should enable him to be his own guide and mentor in this particular, not trusting to any set of dietetic rules too, general to suited to. particular cases. _ Biliousness and costipation, heartburn, wind upon the stomach, sour eructations, headache «nd mental despondency, are among the commitants of yy 2 sia, and we put. it to flight by the Bitters. : Cleopatra Drank;Pearlis In her wine, and captivated Cesar with her beauty and magnificence.
