The forest fire which started about two weeks ago in the vicinity of the Lindsey mine above the town of Washington damaged that company to-the extent of some $5,000, the boarding house andthe old and new mills being wiped out of existence. . It has swept clean the south side of the ridge between Canyon creek and the South Yuba and is now at the Anderson mine on Canyon creék as well as burning up Fall creek. The towns of Washington and Ormonde were saved from destruction by the builiing of backfires, and White -brothers’ ranch at the mouth of Canyon creek had a close call. Large nnmbers of cattle from the lower country were being pastured on the ridge,-and*they have been scattered in all directions by the flames. Many.men have been out for a week fighting the fire and now have it fairly under control. If it get= across Canycn creek there is a likelihood of the Baltic and Erie mining works being burned. Saturday morning’s Virginia City Enterprise says: : A special called meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Centennial Gravel Gold Mining Gompany was held yesterday afternoon at the office of the company in Gold Hill. It was resolved to resume work in the development of the mine (situated in Washington township, Nevada county) which was suspended some months ago. A new tunnel is to ‘be slarted at a point which prospecting work done heretofore, as well as work in neighboring mines, has demonstrated to be the most eligible and advantageous, and sure to intersect the main. gravel channel which runs through the Centennial ground. This tunnel will be not far from the first tunnel run by the company, in which good pay gravel, carrying coarse gold, was developed. It was found to be toohigh, however, anda heavy stream of water flowing in and from the gravel channel prevented sinking or-working-dewn to the bedrock. The new tunnel will be lower down, and run in the bedrock beneath the gravel bed or channel. The knowledge and experience gained at a heavy cost by the company in its long-comtinued and ‘expensive work, cannot but prove effectual in this resumption of operations, Henry Richards, who has so effectively.superintended and conducted the work during the last two or three years, arrived from Nevada City yesYerday. He was present at the meeting, and will conduct the resumption of work as soon as practicable. Secretary James, the well-known Gold Hill assayer,-will go over to the mine next week in order to attend to the work resumption and the geiieral affairs of the company. An assessment of three cents per share was levied, to square up liabilities and defray future expenses. Special #remiums.
