OCTOBER 15 1889. INTO THE DEPTHS. Decp Mining te Be Resumed on the Comstock. * The Enterprise says: For a long time the idea of pumping the water from the lower levels of the Gold Hil! . mines has been entertained. Combinations of companies for that_purpose have been earnestly discussed. at intervals, and at last a definite arrangement bas been made. : Messrs. Jones, Mills, Morrow and ‘Newlands, who control: the principal mines in Gold Hill, have determined to place a pump on the 1200 level of either the Crown Point or Belcher, A BIG SCHEME. Eleaty Sales of Donner Lake Real Estate. 2 The Truckee Republican says: For some time past neg tiations have been pending between several Nevada gentlemen and the owners.of property ar ond Dorinerlake. This woeksales of most of the land have been consummated. The largest sale was by Brickell & Krager to F. G. Newlands, te tract of land ‘being all that at the foot of the lake. The reported consideration was $18,000. This property was purchased last May by Brickell & Kruger for $5,500, since which time they have constructed a dam at the outlet of the lake at a cost of $250°0, which i# intended to raise the lake to high water mark. The other lind purchased belonged to J. F. Juodly, Mrs. E, B. Crocker, and the Sierra. Nevada Wood and Lumber Co. Negotiations are pending with others, and good prices were paid to all. There is a report that the owners of a quarter section of land.at the west end of the lake are holding off for a. biy ~prive-and-ask-$18,000-fer it, The plan and drain these mines and the Seg. _Beleher and Jacket, which will necessarily lift the water from all the south end mines. Thisgi!] be accomplished through the connecfiop that has re: cently beert.nadl bet feen the Yellow Jacket and the Sutro tunnel: The immediate object cf the return to the lower levels is a bady of ore that is known to exist on the 2700 level, of the: Belcher. It has long been # why this.ore was permitted to remain under water, as nearly everybody is aware that itis there. The increased facilities for the work,-and the adjustment of differences between the companies that has been accomplished, have now removed al! obstacles to a speedy return to the depths of the lode, and the removal of the water The expense of the enterprise will supposed. For months the small pump in the Alta has kept the water in the Crown Point and Belcher down so that ore has been extracted 274!feet lower than the level at which the water would stand were the pump not working. The ability of this pump to handle economically so much water demonstrated the comparative moderate cost that will be incurred by the greater undertaking. It is believed that Messrs. Mackay, Hobart, Levy and others controlling the Virginia mines are also favorably disposed to a resumption of deep mining, and-that they will probably follow the example set in Gold Hill and again open the lower levels of: their mines. The significance of this fresh start in the direction where there are unlimited possibilities is manifest, and the still glowing recollections of fortunes made in a day and of opulence won by the stroke of a pick will make everybody give 95 ; Death of a Pioneer. The San Francisco. Examiner of Sunday gays: William C. Stiles, who arrived in this city on July 29, 1849, and resided-for many years in Nevada City, died here ‘Friday evening at the age of sixty-six years and eleven months. Mr. Stiles was a machinist of great ability and the inventor of many valuable improvements in min“Ing apparatus. He leaves a widow and one son. The funeral will take at 2 p. m. today from the parlors of Halstead & Co., 946 Mission street. M. A. Baugh, who recently leased his hotel to Al. Nichols, isin town. Mr. Baugh has been appointed superintendent of the Bluejay mine near Maybert and will at once resume operations on that valuable property. As soon asthe ledge is well opened up a mill will be erected. — Carried Them Back. The Missouri colony at, this city have been in clover for two days past. The Rector brothers received a box of persimmons from Pike county and divided them with their countrymen around here. Hence the contented loc ks-the Missourians wear now. An Afficted Family. ‘Two of the children of Thomas Barron who liveson upper--Spring street died Sunday morning of diptheria.and were buried that evening. They were not taken down till Saturday. Two other children. in the same family are very ill with the same disease. You don’t know how much better you will feel if youtake Hood’s Sarsaparilla. The reason is that this preparation contains only the purest and most powerful alteratives and tonics. To thousands yearly it provesa veritable elixir of life. Mrs. Jos. Lake, Brockway Centre, Mich., writes: “Liver complaint and indigestion made my life a burden and came near ending my existence. For more than four years I suffered untold agony. I was reduced almost to a skeleton, and a had strength to drag myself about. ll kinds of food distressed me, and only the most delicate could be digested at all: Within the time mentioned several physicians treated me without giving relief. Nothing that I took seemed to do any permanent good until I began the use of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, which has produced* wonderful. results. Soon after commencing to take the Sarsaparilla I could see an ‘ Improvement in my. condition, my appetite began to return and with it came the ability to digest all the food taken, my strength improved each day, and after a few months of faithful attention to your directions, I found— myself a well woman, able to attend to all household The medicine has given me a new lease of life, and I cannot thank you too much.” “We, the undersigned, citizens of Brockway Centre, Mich., hereby certify that the above statement, made by Mrs. Lake, is true in every particular and entitled tofull credence.”— 0.
